She was predeceased by her husband Franz (2022), brother Willi Drews and parents Gustav Drews and Elsa Drews (nee Mettner). She is survived by her children Irene Brabazon, Margaret Douglas (Fred) and Peter Obexer. She will be missed by her grandson Mikal (Jennifer), great-granddaughters Alexandra and Josephine, and Theo.
Mom was born in a war-torn time in Poland in 1937. Mom, her brother and Mother fled to Waldgraben, Germany on foot wearing all they could carry while their Father fought in the war. They were reunited several years later and immigrated to Calgary, AB in 1953 where their safe passage was provided by the Canadian Government through work on sugar beet farms. While in Calgary, she also worked in a coffee shop and then at Canada Packers, where she met her husband Franz. They were married in 1956.
In 1957, Herta and Franz moved to Black Creek where they established their well-respected family farm. After 60 years of hard work farming, Mom enjoyed gardening and her beautiful flowers. Her great-grandchildren devoured her raspberries by the bucket. She enjoyed trips to Germany, Austria and Italy with her family and trips to Hawaii and Mexico with her friends. She found walking along the beach very peaceful. She welcomed her family and friends into her home for delicious crepes with homemade jam and delightfully strong coffee.
Herta made many friends at the Oceanside Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses where she was called to help others through her faith. Herta was a wonderful listener and very empathetic, spending countless hours visiting people in hospital, talking with people who needed comfort and helping others through difficult times. The visits, cards and kind words from the Oceanside Congregation gave her strength and helped her find peace.
The family would like to give their most heartfelt thanks to Dion Hamilton and Janet Marriott for their friendship and for always being there for Mom. Mom was fiercely loyal to those who loved her and she will be greatly missed.
There will be a Funeral on May 6th at 2pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1935 Evergreen Road in Campbell River, BC.
