Another year has gone by without our dear Friend Jewel many good thoughts and memories throughout the year regarding Her. Happy Birthday.

I was very sad to hear the bad news. I remember Jewal as a very vibrant, enthusiastic and cheerful person. She was always "UP".  
I met her in the mid 1990's  and remained friends since.  We communicated mostly through telephone and internet but stayed in touch.  I. have good memories and I miss her cheerful voice.

You were and continue to be a total inspiration to many of us. Your light shone very bright. Your energy energized us all to be better, to smile more, to be more patient, more generous, more kind and more grateful. Our shared love of Africa connected our souls eternally. Jewal was the smiling face ushering us through road construction areas on Bowen Island; she was the glowing radiant voice at various concerts. She found us in the ferry lineup even when not employed to do so, and helped us find our way. She helped us find our lost pets, and through her open, honest conversation, helped us so many times to understand our pets, our family members, and our neighbours. 

And above all, she was Aiden's mother. I can't tell you how many times Jewal and I talked about the joy and agony of parenting; the completely overwhelming experience that is loving someone more than you even love yourself, and fighting to survive for that person. 

Jewal was one of the many local mothers whose stories went into the making of this dress. I chose Jewal to model it partly because she was courageous enough to do so, and to understand the intent of conceptual art, but partly because she lived so much of our cultural experience of parenting that I wanted her presence in this photo, along with the dress. She was intrepid during the photoshoot -- she was ALWAYS intrepid. And throughout it all the story of her love for Aiden and her struggle to love herself shone out of her face. It's so much easier to give to others than to ourselves. Her love was enormous, and I don't know that she ever knew how much that love was appreciated in our community. And now as this image has been published and shared across the country, I'm glad that her enormous heart continues to touch people. Goodbye, Jewal. Thank you for your gift of love.

Jewal was a kind soul who never judged anyone and treated everyone as equal. Her infectious energy and enthusiasm was very inspiring, especially with all of the complexities of life that she went through. She had true community spirit and helped so many during her time on Bowen. She will be very missed and my heart goes out to all who loved her 💗

Memories of a beautiful voice and soul. The first song I listened to was Shadow of your Smile. Jewals favorite! Viking Goddess amazing CD. 
When we were in Lund by the sea, Jewal sang operah for a lady's birthday on the ocean boardwalk.  Her beautiful voice echoed in the background. People came out of the restaurant to listen and clap! WOW!  
Was lucky to see her and preform. Greek Fest was great. Jewal was so beautiful!
A fan asked for an autograph and said she was the highlight of his stay in Vancouver. 
Jewal was going to sing Picture of the moon for me but so sadly we lost her. 
Jewal was such a best friend. She helped me through my mum's passing and was able to visit in the hospital to say goodbye. She loved my mum and know it hurt her too.
We always kept in touch. Many phone calls 24/7. Going to miss your sweet voice. Calls always ended with I love you and she would say I love you more!
Jewal was everybody's jewel.
Always quick to help but never  quick to judge. She saw iner beauty in people.

Jewal  or Ruth was a Lovely good Friend of mine that will be held close and dear to my Heart.  Jewal  would come to see me and light up the shop with her  beautiful smile and witty character.We together put on many venues of music and gathering of people with Jewal  organizing them to be extremely successful. She had a fantastic voice and  everyone loved her performing & singing . She  did my bookkeeping for years very thoroughly. I admired and loved her support , smile and voice. This great Woman will be missed  by many. Rest in Peace Ruth you are Loved.

Jewall was a unique 'one of a kind ' individual who left her mark everywhere she went. A singing voice like none other, a beauty beyond compare, and a kind, compassionate spirit shown to everyone and anyone, anywhere.

To  all of us who knew her,  she will be fondly remembered.

My condolences to Aiden, Jewal's family and friends.   I had the good fortune to enjoy Jewal's company on two ferry trips to town in the last few years.  On one occasion, Jewal was on her way to visit her Mom and she spoke with great care and detail of the flowers that she would bring to her Mom for her birthday.   Of course, she also spoke of her precious Aiden.
On another journey, Jewal was on her way to collect her new car and we conversed about many topics.  She lovingly spoke of Aiden, books, projects etc.  Jewal’s big heart infused each topic with much care, truth and passion. When we arrived at the destination close to where Jewal would collect her new car, we agreed to continue the conversation at another time.   Jewal had so many very fine qualities and talents.  
Jewal has departed this earth plain, but her essence and spirit remains in everything of beauty in the world. I suspect that there will always be a smile radiating for her family and friends. 


Our family will miss Jewal. 
She was such a lovely, caring, bubbly person.

She was like a fine gem that shone brightly.  Jewel had a abundance of energy at her disposal and a wide beautiful smile that would light up a room when she entered.  She was fully involved in the Community and loved her life on Bowen Island.  I so enjoyed watching her skillfully monitor the heavy weekend Ferry Traffic, always with a smile and a wave.

Jewel was a shining light. Huge, generous heart, she volunteered endless hours to the Bowen community. No matter what she was doing, she seemed to always have a smile and positive energy. Bowen island will miss her deeply. 

It is hard to imagine not seeing Jewal’s  infectious smile.  I admired her kindness, spirit and enthusiasm for life.  Jewal had a very adventurous life and our community was blessed that one of her ports of call was Bowen.  An angel who received her wings much too early.

Jewal was one of the most spirited people I ever met. Her smile and energy left you with a sense of immense positivity and a serious dose of happiness. Our young boys, now ages 12 and 10, have grown up bumping into Jewal in the cove on warm summer days and on chillier nights at Light up the Cove (including the covid-inspired Santa parade around the island, like in the photo we have shared!). Jewal's tireless energy for the wellbeing, and heart, of Bowen Island will be so very long missed. Lots of love from Maria, Colin, Liam, and Kellan Turnbull

Jewel, always a smile on her face, it radiated through her.  So kind, the first to jump in and volunteer.  Ferry marshaling, she was the only on who could keep us all in check, rain, shine, always the one to turn up. Her passing has shocked and saddened us, too soon gone.

We have all lost a truly genuine, beautiful soul.  May you rest in peace Jewel, love and condolences to Aiden and family.   

Jewal  will be forever missed, her amazing personality made everyone just to lover her. She brightened everyone’s day every time.
I met Jewal just before she moved to Bowen, in a Halloween party at the Legion, she came and say hi to me, super friendly and said to me “Let’s dance…!”  after that very fortunate encounter, every time I would see her it was like an invitation to dance or at least it felt like that because of her ever shining soul ✨ she brightened so many of my days..
I have so many stories with her, but one that it really brings me a memory of her selfless kindness is this one: one day I’m coming back from a walk to the causeway and I see Jewal talking to a senior, ferry just unloaded and she was busy marshaling. When I came closer she waved at me and said, “can you help me out ? This person needs to get home and I have to stay here helping with the ferry traffic. Please take my keys and take him to his house..” so I did, I took him to his place on Jewal’s vehicle and on the way back I learned that it was the first time she had meet this person and she was doing everything within her power to help him out. 
Jewal fit perfect in to Bowen’s community where we help and care for each other, and she went beyond that, volunteering in everything she could, working extra hours and always having time for a friend and some fun too. I always admire her warrior spirit. She never gave up, on anything, she was very smart and always found a solution or a way. I will miss her smile, I will miss to see her and feeling good after  a chat even or even a quick hello. Fly high beautiful Jewal, you will live for ever in our hearts ❤️

Jewal was one of the first people i met when I moved to Bowen and we became fast friends. We spent Christmas’s and thanksgivings together with our other friends and family. We did so many fun things together: boating, kayaking, ladies happy hour at the beach, sunset steak and lobster dinner at the helicopter pad, dancing in the grass on warm summer days and evenings, card games or just sitting and talking. There is SO MUCH to unpack. God speed Jewal. I loved you ❤️😘💔🌈

Brian, I had no idea that Jewel was your sister.   I didn’t know her by “Hagen”.   My condolences to you and your family.   Jewel was indeed a Jewel.  A precious gem in our small Bowen community.  

Like countless others, I am deeply saddened by the loss of Jewal to this world.  Our collective grief is palatable;  this giant rock we live upon has shifted under the absence of her tiny weight.  

When I conjure Jewal in my mind, I can hear her infectious laugh, feel her kindness and charisma, and see her big smile - especially the devilish grin -that's when you knew you had a great story coming!

I will never forget meeting Jewal years ago.  I was with a large group of Boweners, enjoying a perfect summer day on a 70 ft yacht.  Jewal came roaring up on a speed boat with her date like the rockstar she was.  After the boats were rafted and engines cut, I immediately dove into the ocean, and Jewal dove right in after me.  We floated and bobbed and giggled out there in the middle of Howe Sound reveling in the sheer pleasure of being alive. (And of course, she treated me to a few snippets of her favorite arias!) I recall being utterly impressed by her;  she had a genuine soul and an immediately likable personality.  And she laughed so easily and so well.

Jewal had a sensitivity and depth of caring which is rarely encountered in humanity.  She put her everything into everything she did and most often, it was for the sake of others.  We should all be reminded in her honour to be a little kinder, a little more forgiving, and to leave even perfect strangers a little happier for having known us.

Aiden, should you read this; your mama loved you deeply, entirely, and fiercely.  We are so very sorry for your loss.  And to the rest of the family;  with my deepest condolences; thank you for letting us have precious Jewal for a while.  


Jewel had an amazingly big heart.   When my husband Chris was going for cancer treatment, we spent many days in the medical assured loading spot of the ferry line.  Jewel, as ferry Marshall, always made a point of coming to our car and chatting to Chris, cheering him up, asking him how he was doing, and telling him stories that would make him laugh out loud.  Jewel made a difference.  She made a difference not just to us, but to so many people on Bowen and to the community in general.

Oh Jewal - I didn’t know you well enough, but I sure enjoyed and respected you - your joy in life, your concern for others, your cool head in heated times.  I wish I had known you were Stan Hagen’s daughter so that we could have shared stories about him, and gained insights from one another about him.  He was the most deeply principled Cabinet Minister I met while working in government.  He was a pleasure to be with - just as you were such a pleasure to have in our lives on Bowen.  (I hope you got a chance to write that Memoir of yours. ) Thank you for your smile, your warmth and for walking together with us for awhile.

I met Jewal through her volunteer work on Bowen & then as a singer & performer helping organize Steamship Days, & later as someone trying to understand the civil court system.  She had such energy!  A dynamo in everything - running  up & down the ferry line-ups trying to marshall us (!), belting out a show tune in an outstanding costume, total frustration at her own good intentions that were not getting the results she'd hoped for.  She had a huge heart, a great smile & a wicked sense of humour.   Her son was her biggest love & highest priority &, for his sake, I am most sad  that she has died so young.  (Retired Judge) Judi. 

Jewal was a lovely kind person.  She was genuine, warm and positive.  Her passing was a shock and she is terribly missed by our community.  Condolences to her family.

Jewal loved to sing, loved to help, loved to love, and loved to live.  There is now a hole in the fabric of Bowen Island and we have no idea how it will ever be refilled.  RIP Jewal.       

Jewel was truly a gem to our little community here on Bowen Island. It takes a special kind of person to volunteer endless hours for events and help to build and maintain strong community,  Jewal was one of them. For the last 7 years that our family has lived on Bowen we have had many encounters with Jewel, each one was amplified by her warmth, her charisma and her love for this great island. She will be dearly missed here, and if its any consolation to the family - please know she had a lasting impact to all who have lived here and been graced by her radiance. Rest well my dear. 

Jewal was such a beautiful person. Every interaction I had with her ferry marshaling or a chat in the cove or Artisan she was smiling. She was always warm and approachable. Like many have said she was welcoming to all newcomers to Bowen. She will be greatly missed. Hugs to her son and family ❤

She was truly a "Jewal" and such a part of the close-knit community of Bowen, and she is very missed.  We are all very much in shock and I cannot imagine the pain that Aiden and her family are in, my heart breaks for you all.

She last called me a few ago looking for me to help her get a job flagging with the Muni but alas there was nothing I could do for her, but I encouraged her to keep trying.

Regardless of her struggles, she always has a huge smile on her face, always stopped to ask how everyone was, and her love for Aiden was her whole life.

There are not many communities that could boast of having an opera-singing ferry marshall but thanks to Jewal, Bowen Island could! She had a warm, sunny personality and suited her chosen name of Jewal. As others have said, her contributions to Bowen were many and she will be greatly missed. Condolences to Aiden and to the rest of her family. We’ll be missing her with you. 

I worked with Jewal briefly when she first moved to Bowen, as well as being neighbors for a time. I always admired her friendliness and how she went out of her way to connect with people. She had the perfect disposition for her ferry marshalling job. Jewal was pretty special.


Every single time - literally every single time-  she passed by, she stopped to say hi with a funny or kind thing to say to make me smile. At times life seemed hard as it is for most, and even then she was a light. That’s courage and compassion we all need. 

Jewel has radiated kindness here on Bowen and has touched so many people in our community.  Sincere condolences to her son and family.   Jewel will be missed.

Jewal conveyed so much energy and joy whenever I met her. And meeting her was a common occurrence since she was typically busy working on something in the Cove, out and about with Aiden, or singing wherever there was an audience. Two memories of Jewal  to illustrate. 

The first was on a cool, grey day in the Cove during one of the events (maybe Steamship Days). In front of a fairly small and warmly dressed audience was Jewal, glammed up in an evening dress, performing a selection of songs to entertain.

The second was also in the Cove. Walking the dog in the middle of the day, I heard snippets of the Queen of the Night aria sounding on the Trunk Road. As I approached the patio of one of the restaurants, all became clear. It was Jewal in wet weather work gear, giving a lesson about opera singing to her workmates as they were clearing things up, probably after Light Up.

Jewal will be missed on Bowen. Condolences to her family.

Jewal.  Always such a bright light. She always made me smile when our paths would cross on random days. She loved this community and gave so much through both paid work and her hours of volunteer work.And how she lit up when getting a chance to sing for an audience. I will miss her presence and cherish her memory.

Jewal was such a vibrant, talented, and incredibly helpful member of our community of Bowen island. She was the smiling face when dealing with our ever present ferry and traffic issues; always happy to lend a hand where needed. And to hear her sing! So hard to know that we will never again see Jewel's smiling face around the cove.  Jewal made time to greet everyone, young or old. Her contribution and enthusiasm to the well being of Bowen Island was enormous and she will be sadly missed.   Our condolences to Aiden, all her friends and family. 

One morning, as I walked toward  the ferry, Jewal was laughing uncontrollably as she marshalled. “I ripped my pants!!!” She shrieked.  So she stood there waving the cars on with one hand and holding the seat of her pants together with the other. As many have commented: she loved her marshalling job. She was a hard worker (a fashion fail wasn’t going to take her off the job). And, yes she could laugh, at herself and at absurdity. 

6 years ago, July, I moved to Bowen. 
August, of my first summer, I met Jewal. 
She came right up too me, introduced herself, and we became friends. She kinda told me we were Gonna be friends, lol. 
Whenever we were in each others presence, it's like, the world was non existent. She was always Interested, kind,  generous, and always with a hug, and Always with a smile, even in hard times. I will miss her energy, her spirit of joy, and love for her friends and family. Jewal you were Beacon of Joy and Love. RIP 💐💐💐

May Jewel Rest in Peace.  Very sad to hear this news and my condolences to her family and son Aiden.  Her love of the Bowen community shone bright in so many ways.  Dear Jewel we will all miss you very much ❤

In a community as small as Bowen the impact of loosing a shining star like Jewal affects us all. She always greeted me with smile and great conversation.  I am glad that I got to know her and will miss her. 

From the first time I met Jewel on the night she moved to Bowen, her light was undeniable.  She shone with her smiles, chit chatting and always a willingness to help.  Jewel was genuine and will be so missed by our whole community, Bowen Island.  I know I will miss her.  Condolences to Aiden and the rest of her family.

I am so sad that she's gone. She was a friendly, outgoing person who could draw that out of others. I remember the time she waved at me excitedly in the ferry line-up to say hi as if we were old friends, even though she had only met me once or twice several years earlier, and she said to me, "I'm performing on Saturday, you should come!!" I was unable to make it to that performance but after that I got to know her better. Some time later I heard for the first time a recording of her singing, and I was astonished at her talent. I hadn't realized she was THAT good! I will miss chatting with Jewal. Many condolences to Aiden and the rest of her family. 

I am very sorry we have lost Jewal. She was a valued and kind part of our community. She provided informal and informed comments to me (a municipal councillor), and she contributed to many of our community traditions. Her death has shocked and saddened us. Rest in peace, Jewal. 

Jewal was a shining light in our Bowen community, and her accepting and joyful soul is going to be deeply missed in so many ways! Sincere condolences to all who love her.

Jewel made me feel welcome the moment I'm at our 7 years ago when I first moved to Bowen. Our sons were in school together and she always made a point to make sure I knew all about things new people might want to know.. every time I saw her she made me feel a little happier and elated to be around her.. deepest condolences to Aiden and to all of her family and friends. She will always be remembered in our hearts and in our minds as a ray of sunshine a real gem

She was THE light of our Christmas celebration, Light Up Bowen.  She calmed even the most irate driver in the never ending ferry lineups.  She was a valuable member of the Board of Tourism Bowen Island.  She gave herself to Bowen with no expectation of notoriety or even thanks.   She loved our community and was/is loved by all.    We are all in shock and disbelief that she’s no longer with us.
