Second born of John & Mary Dawes in Stretford (a suburb of Manchester), England. Many of her childhood memories are of spending time with her Grandmother Laura gardening in the allotment. Donna joined the WRENS (Women’s Royal English Navy) at 17 1/2 for 3 years until her marriage. She & her then husband, a member of the Royal Navy, spent 2 commissions in Malta – she described those years as the happiest time of her life.
Donna immigrated to Canada with her two children in 1963. Most of her career was spent at the Burlington Public Library in Burlington, Ontario – appropriate as she was an avid reader until her eyesight deteriorated. During her 25 years there she made several lifelong friends. After retiring, she spent several winters in the Comox/Courtenay area & in 2005 moved permanently to the Island. Donna loved her years living on the Island which was evident when she took up painting again. She was a member of the Comox Seniors Centre & volunteered in the kitchen & shop & spent many afternoons playing Mahjong.
Donna is survived by her son, Carl of Comox; daughter, Alison of Puslinch, Ontario; grandson, Randell (Julia) of Kingston, Ontario and adorable great-granddaughter Josie. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Beryl in England; 3 nephews - Gerald (Krys) of Fulshear, Texas; David and Duncan (Alison) in England as well as her niece, Susan (John) of Aylmer, Ontario. She also has several great nephews & nieces in the England, Ontario and the U.S. Donna also leaves behind a special friend, Christine, who stood by her till the end.
Donna was predeceased by her parents and siblings – Margaret (Paddy) and David and a nephew, Richard, in addition to the many Dachshunds she had over the years, usually named Heidi, Cindy or Sarah.
As per Donna’s wishes there will be no funeral or celebration of life. She is to be cremated & her ashes scattered in the ocean. Donations in memory of Donna to Y.A.N.A. (You Are Not Alone) Fund Society in Comox or Covenant House in Vancouver would be appreciated. Share memories or condolences at www.piercysmtwashingtonfuneral.com
