Norman was born in Victoria and lived with his parents and siblings at Gordon Head in Saanich. He was predeceased by his mother Dorothy, 1941, his father Jack, 1977, his sister Betty Heryet, 1998, his brother Kenneth, 2000, son-in-law Kerry Pollner, 2002, son Chris, 2005, and his wife Ivy 2009.
He left behind his brother Harold, Courtenay, daughters Phyllis Hrad (Otto) Parksville, Kathleen Bradshaw (Marvin) Alert Bay, Sheila Pollner, Shawnigan Lake, sons Stephen, Burnaby and Brian, Vancouver, and daughters Diane Potter, Vancouver, Valerie Grey(Peter) Australia, and Elizabeth (Betsy) Muir (Brian) Comox; 14 Grandchildren: David, Elizabeth (Beth), Gregory, Kyle, Kory, Kurt, Ellen, Paul, Christopher, Madeleine, James, Cheryl, Marina and Natalie. 9 Great-grandchildren: Cameron, Crimson, Saffron, Anjeleigh, Jordon, Breeanna, Emily, Boston and Markus. As well as many nieces and nephews.
Norman enlisted in the army in 1943 and trained in Chilliwack, where he taught self defense. In 1946 he married Ivy Taylor and they had three daughters: Phyllis, Kathleen and Sheila. On the Island Norm apprenticed with O'Neill's Glass in ceramic tile setting. He received his Mate's ticket from Victoria Tug and Barge, and also worked as an orderly at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Later, Norm married Margaret Blackmore and moved to Coquitlam where they had six children: Stephen, Diane, Chris, Valerie, Brian and Elizabeth. He worked for Canada Fish Packers, and Dairyland, from which he retired in 1990.
Norm purchased a house in Point Grey in 1964. Soon after he remarried Ivy. Together they spent many happy years in Vancouver. In the 1970's Norm built and launched a 30 foot cabin cruiser, the Time Thief, on which he and Ivy enjoyed cruising the Gulf Islands.
In his retirement Norm was an active member of the Vancouver Angling and Game Association, the Spanish Banks Streamkeepers group and volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
A celebration of Norm's life will be held at Piercy's Mt. Washington Funeral Home, 440 England Avenue, Courtenay, B.C. on Saturday, December 3rd from 12-3pm.
