Robert Drummond (Bob) Ogilvie, more importantly, Papa, passed away easily and peacefully Monday May 20th 2019 surrounded by the ones he loved and who loved him. He had turned 84 on his last birthday but you would never know it by the way he acted. He was always young at heart with a quick mind and an even quicker wit.
Papa was born and raised in Vancouver attending school in Kitsilano until he had enough of it. He lasted until the 8th grade but his lack of schooling made no difference to his successful career and his life. He saw himself in many situations and occupations as the years rolled on. An institution where one might find oneself when one may not have made the best choices as a young man was where he landed shortly after he’d had enough of school. But, as only Papa could, he made the best of it and was actually disappointed when it was time to leave. He told us he quite enjoyed the meals he was given and would miss having them three times a day. His sharp mind saw him able to master any skill he attempted and if he couldn’t master it at first, he would figure out a way. Being so adept with his hands and his mind saw him work in trades that demanded skill, knowledge, troubleshooting abilities and physical fitness. Bobby worked the majority of his career as a self employed, well sought after electrician. Wiring residential properties was his main focus but often he would be called upon by many local businesses for his expertise as well. His attention to detail was impeccable and carried over to his daily life, as those who knew him were so well aware.
Bob was an active member of several outdoor clubs over the years in the Comox Valley and enjoyed camping right up until last summer. He lead many scout troops into the wilderness as a young man and more recently volunteered and enjoyed his time at the Courtenay Fish and Game Club. He hunted, fished, backpacked and explored extensively around our beautiful Island in his younger years
There wasn’t anything that Papa couldn’t fix and nobody knew this better than his family. Anytime Papa was presented with something broken, he would return it a few days later, as good as knew. Sometimes it required a little thinking, but Papa could do it. Bob raised his children Alan(Kim) and Doreen(Clark:deceased) on his own in the Comox Valley before they both moved to the Lower Mainland to start their adult lives. He later went on to help raise two more children that became a part of his world when he started sharing his life with Linda. Sandy(Liza) and Rae(Rocky) are both based in the Comox Valley and are all so grateful to have had him as part of their lives for the past forty years.
Papa had twelve grandchildren through the combination of kids and at last count 5 great grandchildren. He was fortunate enough to travel to Disneyland with two of his grandchildren, Hawaii with two others, numerous camping trips with the four that lived nearest to him and many great hours of times shared at family gatherings. He always had a fridge stocked with juice, a freezer full of ice cream sandwiches and cupboards that always had sweets for kids. He took his role of Papa very seriously.
There will be a celebration of his life held at a later date for his family as he was never much into a “to-do” for himself. Notes of condolences can be sent to Linda Grant if you wish.
