Norm was born on May 5th, 1934, in Calgary, Alberta as the only child to Robert Frederick Sharratt and Violet Ivy Cotterill. Norm attended Western Canada High School before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in April 1953. As a Radio Officer, his time in the Air Force included stations in London, Clinton, Summerside, Comox, Winnipeg, Cold Lake and Uplands with squadrons 428 and 410. Norm loved to talk about his time flying in the Lancaster and CF 100 aircrafts. His time in the Air Force included flights through Europe and up to Alert in the high Arctic.
Norm married Edith Siemens on May 17th, 1957, in Winnipeg, MB. In February 1962 Norm was honorably discharged from the Air Force and started his second career as a manager at AGT in Calgary until he retired in 1989.
Norm was an avid SCUBA diver. He earned his PADI Dive Masters and travelled to many places where he could enjoy diving and helping teach others the skill. His other endeavors included hiking, and cross-country skiing in the Canadian Rockies. In his retirement Norm and Edith travelled all over Canada and the United States in their tent trailer, visiting family and friends from all parts of the continent.
Norm’s favorite station in the Air Force was Comox, and in 2008, Norm moved back with his wife Edith to enjoy this beautiful part of Canada. Norm would play billiards daily at the CFB Comox officers mess and would take friends and family on tours of the Air Force Museum. He enjoyed hosting family dinners and BBQs at his place right until the end.
Norm could always remember a joke or a rhyme when it suited the conversation. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him for his warm smile, sense of humour and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Norm's name to the Red Cross.
He is survived by his wife Edith, children Alison, Sandra, Lisa (Bill) and Bruce. His Grandchildren Sarah (Tyler), Daniel (Alexandra), Kyrin, Derek (Devan) and Alexander, and great grandchildren Quinten and Celeste.
A celebration of life will be announced at a future date.
