Donald Joseph Courtade, Sr., affectionately known as "Paw Paw Cracker," passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, at his home in Covington, Louisiana, at the age of 81. He was born on October 30, 1943, in New Orleans, La to August William Courtade and Florence Julia (Navo) Courtade.
Donald grew up in New Orleans and graduated from St. Aloysius High School. He proudly served in the Air Force Reserve, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his military service, he continued to serve his community, working for the City of New Orleans and later for State Investors Bank.
A talented musician, Donald played bass guitar and piano and was a founding member of the Nobles Band and Orleans. His musical talents graced many carnival balls and even the wedding of Tom and Gayle Benson. At home, he found joy in his "Hobby Room," where he created the city of Bearland, serving as its mayor for many years. Donald’s one-of-a-kind legacy will forever be treasured by those who knew him.
Donald is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Patricia "Patsy" (Walch) Courtade, whom he lovingly called "Love." He also leaves behind his son, Donald "Don" J. Courtade, Jr. (the late Staci), and his cherished grandchildren: Devin "Big Man" Courtade (Deette), Gavin Milner, Allie Milner, and Hayden "Lil' Big Man" Courtade. He will be fondly remembered by his close friend Phillip Wetzel, and his sisters-in-law Mary Gaussiran and Christine Toups (Bengy). The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his dedicated caretaker Karen Brown, as well as the compassionate staff of Home Instead and Anvoi Hospice, especially his hospice nurse Marguerite Hamilton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass in Donald's honor at Grace Funeral Home, 450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington, LA 70433, on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. Lazarus of Bethany Memorial Garden, adjacent to Grace Funeral Home.
