Robert “Bob” Charles Amort - dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend - passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Monday, October 23, 2023 after a long and valiant battle with prostate cancer. Due to his unwavering faith in God, he had the strength to battle the disease with the most amazing grace and bravery for nearly 20 years.
Robert was born to Norman Sinclair Amort Sr. and Joanne Christine Wayland Amort in the mountains of Matagalpa, Nicaragua and became the eldest son in a line of six children. In an excerpt from his mother’s memoir “Reflections Rainbows and Remembrance”, she writes, “Just short of 20 minutes after 8:00 AM, on the 17th morning in September of 1951, a tremendous effort yielded a lusty, outspoken, 8-pound 12-ounce baby, whose 22 inches of self was eased out by Dr. Perez to reveal the undeniable fact that we now had a son.” In his late teenage years, he moved to the Greater New Orleans area after his father was appointed to the post of Consul General of Nicaragua, based in New Orleans. He attended college at Loyola University New Orleans and received his Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing and Management in 1973 which led to an early career in surgical sales.
He had a lifelong love for exploring ideas of new inventions and business ventures. This love eventually garnered one of his best-known titles in the Mandeville/Covington area as the ‘Coffee Man’ after starting Single Bean Coffee Company in 2009. Throughout his life, he formed countless relationships and never met a stranger that didn't quickly become a friend. His generous spirit and kind heart left an impression wherever he went. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world and he was unendingly proud of his four children, something he mentioned often. He would always recount, “my children are my greatest accomplishments.” He instilled in them the values of love, compassion, and the importance of family, leaving an enduring legacy of warmth and unity. Robert will live on forever through the many stories he shared and the memories of those who had the opportunity to know him. The void Robert leaves behind is vast, but will rest in peace knowing he was so loved by so many.
Robert joined his daughter, Maria Eugenia, in Heaven, where they are no doubt catching up on time that was cut too soon. Also preceding him in death are his parents, Joanne and Norman Amort Sr., and his beloved sister Janine de los Angeles Amort. He is survived by his wife, Melanie, his sons, Andrew Charles and David Joseph as well as his daughter, Kelley Dianne (Jeff), and his son, Ryan Chirstopher (Ariana).
By the grace of God, he was thankfully gifted the time to experience the joys of being a grandfather to four amazing grandchildren, Vance Charles and Margot Christine Amort and Sloane Dianne and Pierce Michael Derner prior to his passing.
Additionally, he is survived by his four siblings: Norman “Bully” Amort (Kathleen) and Steven Amort (Laura), Dianne Delgado (Eddie René), and Sandra Maynard (Michael), who will continue to carry on his memory and the cherished family bonds they shared.
His friends and family are invited to share happy memories and celebrate Robert’s life in the way he would want to be remembered - as a loving and caring man who loved his children beyond measure. Please join them in that celebration on November 4th, 2023 at Mary Queen of Peace Church in Mandeville, LA. Visitation will begin at 10:30am and Mass will be held at 11:30am. He will be interred at Saint Joseph’s Abbey in Covington, LA immediately following mass. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tulane Cancer Center Prostate Cancer Research Fund, an organization whose work profoundly affected Robert’s life. His family would like to personally thank Dr. Alton Oliver Sartor for his dedication to giving Robert the countless years they weren’t sure they would get after his diagnosis. The memories that filled their hearts during that time were priceless.
