

Violeta Isabel Suazo de Rugama, the family matriarch and beloved to all who met her, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, in Covington, Louisiana, at the age of 99. Born on November 5, 1926, in Acoyapa Chontales, Nicaragua, Violeta lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and service to others.
After graduating as an Executive Secretary following high school, Violeta supported her parents’ businesses from a young age. Her career continued to grow as she played a vital role in the growth of Hospital Rugama. In 1983, she became Director of the hospital, solidifying the legacy she created through her leadership and commitment.
Violeta was an active member of the Medical School Wives Association. She participated in charitable work, initiatives, and attended medical congresses. Her philanthropic work was recognized in 2008 when she was honored as the Spiritual Mother of the Year for her dedication in helping others.
Violeta was a deeply devoted Catholic that centered her life around her close relationship with God. She often attended daily mass and was committed to living in grace. She held a special devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and was often witnessed in constant prayer.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Manuel Adán Rugama; their son Rafael Ángel Rugama; and her parents César Napoleón Suazo and Cándida Gutierrez de Suazo. She is survived by her children: Violeta Thompson (Alberto Thompson), Francisco César Rugama, and Manuel Adán Rugama; grandchildren: Violeta Margarita Thompson, Muriel Thompson Villavaso (Alex Villavaso), Christian Alberto Thompson, Francisco César Rugama Jr., and Sandra María Rugama; as well as great-grandchildren: Cameron Michael Clark, Victoria Elizabeth Tidwell, and Remy Lowell Villavaso.
A Memorial Mass to honor Violeta’s memory will be held on March 7, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Grace Funeral Home & St. Lazarus of Bethany Memorial Garden, 450 Holy Trinity Drive.
