Jim Ray Doolin, 65, of Craig, Colorado, was taken home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 19, 2025. Known for his genuine heart, quick wit, and steadfast character, Jim leaves behind a legacy of dedication, kindness, and a life deeply rooted in hard work and love for others.
Born on November 27, 1959, in Hayden, Colorado, Jim was the son of Donald and Marygrace (Hinkle) Doolin. He grew up in a close-knit family with his siblings John, Ed, and Debra, learning early the values of loyalty and perseverance that later defined his life. Jim graduated from Hayden High School in 1978, but long before earning his diploma, he was already putting in long nights, working graveyard shifts at Empire Mine during his senior year. That early commitment to his craft marked the beginning of an extraordinary 40-year career in Colorado’s mining industry.
Jim spent the first 16 years of his career with Empire Mine, before joining Twentymile Coal Company in 1994. His expertise, leadership, and insatiable curiosity guided him to numerous roles—lead electrician, electrical instructor, and eventually overseeing operations at the helm of the Allen Bradley room. Among his proudest achievements was his service on the mine rescue team, where his skill and courage earned numerous accolades, including a Benchman National Championship. His sense of duty extended beyond the mines as well; Jim served as an EMT for several years, continuing to look after the wellbeing of those around him.
On August 6, 1983, Jim married Penny Zulian. Together they raised two sons, Travis and Nicholas, building a life centered on family, laughter, and outdoor adventure. Though their marriage ended in 2009, they remained connected through their shared devotion to their children and grandchildren. On September 1, 2010, Jim found love again when he married Cindy Hall, a partnership that brought him renewed joy and companionship in his later years.
Jim’s family was his greatest source of pride. He is survived by his wife, Cindy (Hall) Doolin; sons Travis Doolin and Nicholas Doolin; stepson James Foster; grandson Royal Doolin; and granddaughter Molly Doolin. He rejoiced in his role as a grandfather, cherishing time spent with his grandson Royal, born June 30, 2010, and granddaughter Molly, born November 8, 2012. He is also survived by his brother John Doolin and many dear relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Debra (Eads) Doolin, and his brother Ed Doolin.
Outside of work and family, Jim found peace and inspiration in the great outdoors. Whether fishing by the river, hunting in the early dawn, or camping under Colorado’s wide-open skies, he was never happier than when surrounded by nature—and those he loved.
A graveside service celebrating Jim’s life will be held at Craig Cemetery on October 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. Honorary pallbearers include Travis Doolin, Nicholas Doolin, James Foster, Casey Doolin, Jesse Doolin, Colton Doolin and Shawn Daugherty.
Jim will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and deep gravity of character—the kind of man whose presence made others feel grounded and seen. His spirit lives on in the laughter of his family, the stories told by those who worked beside him, and the beauty of the land he so deeply loved.
