Stephen Roy Mercado, born on August 21, 1962, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado was sent to his eternal home on May 27, 2025. We are deeply saddened and shocked by his sudden death. He was the beloved son of Salvador and Pearl Mercado.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Steve will fondly recall his radiant smile, compassionate nature, and deep affection for his family and friends. He had a strong passion for painting, horseback riding, visiting casinos, exploring various music genres, and creating memorable moments with loved ones. Steve found fulfillment in helping others and often volunteered his time and efforts. While his physical presence may no longer be with us, his spirit will remain a source of inspiration and comfort.
Steve graduated Valedictorian of his class and was voted best dressed in his class in 1980 from Lake County High School. He was extremely motivated and was accepted into the Phoenix Institute of Technology. From there he went to Arizona State University and received his degree in Architectural Engineering.
After graduating Steve came back to Denver, Colorado where he started his love and interest in the telecommunication world. He worked for MCI, was the Director for Cbeyond, and worked at Advoda. As time passed, Steve returned to Leadville, Colorado. There he was involved with getting the new St. Vincent hospital up and running as director of Activities while also caring for his mom and dad. After his parents passed, he found a new adventure helping with the Eagles Lodge, the senior center, and many others. He loved to write grants and helped any and everyone to become successful.
Steve is survived by his sister, Peggy (Ty) Wilson of Craig, his brother David (Tammy) of Florence, along with nephews Matthew (Amanda) Mercado, Bryce Ponikvar, Justin (Jaime) Alvidrez, and nieces Stacy (Chad) Cown, Racine Arnold, and Stephanie Alvidrez, and numerous other aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Salvador and Pearl Mercado.
A graveside memorial service will take place at the Oak Creek Cemetery in Oak Creek on June 28th at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception at the Oak Creek Decker Park. Steve will be laid to rest with his mother and father, and will be missed forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in Steve's memory to the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #91 in care of Grant Mortuary.
