Vernon graduated from Nitro High School in 1963 and later earned his degree from West Virginia State University. He dedicated over 30 years to teaching and coaching in Kanawha County, primarily at Andrew Jackson Middle School and South Charleston High School. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Vernon enjoyed playing pickleball, golfing, and running 5Ks. He especially cherished time spent with his seven grandchildren. One of his favorite places was Canaan Valley, where he and his wife found peace and renewal in the beauty of the outdoors. Gifted with his hands and a natural problem solver, Vernon could fix or build anything a skill he readily shared to help family, friends, and neighbors.
Vernon is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Ben and Talia of Nashville, TN, and Jason and Terri of Cross Lanes; his daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and David LaMaster of Cross Lanes; grandchildren Olivia, Sawyer, Abram, and Claire of Cross Lanes and Brandon, Nicholas, and Benji of Nashville, TN; and his brothers, Ed and wife Terrie of Akron, OH, and Harold of Cross Lanes, WV.
Family and friends may visit on Friday, July 18th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home in Cross Lanes, with the service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
