Sharon is survived by her children, Jessica Virtz, Jennifer Stevens, Jason Stevens and his wife Valerie Stevens, and her grandchildren Alexander Virtz, Zachary Virtz, Jaxon Pickron, Collin Stevens, and Trevor Stevens. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ken Stevens; her brother, Wallace Carter; her sister, Verla (JoAnn/Peni) Carter, and her parents, Elisha and Golda Carter.
Sharon was born on September 7, 1958 in Mount Hope, WV before being adopted and raised in Eccles, WV. On October 20, 1990, she married Ken Stevens and became the mother of three children whom she loved and supported for her entire life. She eagerly welcomed the arrival of all her grandchildren and loved nothing more than the moments she was able to spend with her family. She also had a plethora of unofficial sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and more over the years, and yet always had more love to share with new people.
Sharon graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in social work, and later earned a teaching certificate. Upon entering the Education system, she found a life-long love and passion in teaching, particularly as a Math teacher, and went on in her later years to obtain a Master’s degree in Mathematics. She spent most of her teaching career at Andrew Jackson Middle School and was widely beloved by her students and colleagues over the years.
Sharon became an avid Barbershop Music fan after marrying Ken and joined the events team for the Johnny Appleseed District with him to run registration for District events in 1996. She remained the “Registration Queen” for more than 20 years and was so well known and loved in JAD that they “coronated” her the Queen of JAD in 2016. In 2019, she was honored by becoming the first woman inducted into the JAD Hall of Fame. In addition to her work with the JAD district, she worked with and supported the local barbershop chapter (the Greater Kanawha Valley Chapter), in a number of capacities over the years and was the first woman to hold a membership in the chapter when the Barbership Harmony Society opened registration to everyone through the Everyone In Harmony initiative.
A memorial service and “Life Afterglow” will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 4:00 pm, at Cross Lanes United Methodist Church. The family will be receiving people at the Church at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are invited to donate to either the Harmony Foundation in support of the Barbershop Harmony Society or the family’s GoFundMe page to assist with necessary expenses.
