He was born in St. Albans, October 30, 1927, to Jack and Velva (McCallister) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Larry Rodrick Smith.
He was an Army veteran, having served during the WW II era.
Shelby is survived by his wife of 72 years, Helen Penelope (Ellis) Smith; granddaughters, Anita (Rick) Hinzman of Sandyville, Nichole (Jason) Ringler of Pennsylvania; grandson, William (Tammy) Smith of Martinsburg; great - grandchildren, Brandon, Cyerra, Justin (Lauren), Kelli Hinzman, Robert Smith, Camden and Zayne Ringler; great - great - grandchildren, Kynlee and Noah Hinzman.
A celebration of Shelby's life will be 1 p.m. Monday, September 24, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor Tim Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by St. Albans VFW Post 6418 and American Legion Post 73.
A gathering of family and friends will begin at 11 a.m. until the time of service.
