

RUTH MARGARET MEARSHEIMER, 89, former resident of Croton-on-Hudson and Cortlandt Manor, NY, passed away on Thursday evening, July 21st at the University Medical Center, Princeton, NJ. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Mary Baumann, she graduated from Richmond Hill High School, class of 1940 where she was a classmate of Rodney Cohen, later known to all as Rodney Dangerfield. She possessed a keen sense for quality and that was evidenced when, at a local dance, she spotted a young college student and immediately determined that her future had to be with him. Determined and relentless, she was able to win his heart and on St Patrick’s Day, 1946, she and then Lieutenant Thomas J. Mearsheimer were married. There are so many today, children and grandchildren alike, who are most grateful for her efforts. This dynamic duo were together for over 61 years and had three sons(John, Thomas, Peter) and two daughters(JoAnne and Ellen). Additionally, she is survived by fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. For 34 years she and the Colonel lived in Croton, later moving to Cortlandt Manor. While in Croton, she worked for many years as a secretary to the Principal for the Pierre Van Cortlandt (PVC) Middle School. With the Colonel’s passing, she relocated to Princeton, New Jersey where she remained till her death. Ruth, a devoted wife, wonderful mother and grandmother will be dearly missed. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 24th from 3 to 5 & 7 to 9 pm at the Carter Funeral Home in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. There will be a Funeral Mass on Monday, July 25th at 9 am at Holy Name of Mary Church. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery
