My deepest condolences.  Bruce was a knight of a man, honorable and such a sense of humor.  He will be remembered and deeply missed.

My deepest sympathies to Ruth and the entire family.  As we mourn the loss of a dear friend and colleague, we also celebrate the life of an incredible person!  My fondest memories of Bruce have to be when he traveled with me in Michigan for work.  As we drove around the state, he called my attention to countless bait shops every few miles...he knew Michigan better than I did based on where the fishing industry had taken him! He truly was a "good catch" in so many ways to so many people...whether it was to talk fishing, throw a pun, brag about his family, give a Scottish history lesson, tell a story, sing a song, give a good belly laugh with tears and all, or just be a sincere friend, Bruce was the man! Oh how I will miss you, but your smile, your laughter, and your puns will forever be a positive influence on my life! We are all better people for having the privilege of knowing you Bruster!

Bruce will be missed!!! My prayers are with your family during this sad time.

Dear Ruth and family, 
When we think of Bruce, we think of a great smile! When he engaged you in a conversation, you knew he was listening and interested.  Our deepest sympathies go out to all of you.  You are in our prayers for strength and God's peace.

Dean and I had such a wonderful time with both of you in Wisconsin. Bruce made us the best dinner, who can forget that potato salad.  I think of Bruce often when I walk in my yard and see that large stone I  managed to to haul back with us from our trip.  Bruce was kind, thoughtful and so considerate of everyone.  I will miss his smiling presence.

Bruce was the first person to welcome me to Mayo with a phone call! Wow,what a kind, funny, loving guy! Bruce touched so many and has left an indelible imprint in our memories and on our hearts. Bruce will be so missed.  To Ruth, family and friends, know that you are all in my prayers as we mourn the loss of our Bruster.

It is difficult to put into words how much Bruce meant!!  His wonderful attitude and humor changed everyone he met for the better!  What great memories I have and know they will always bring a smile or laugh like the photo of our team here. Your're the best Bruster!!!

I, too, worked with Bruce for many years at NWCH laboratory. We all enjoyed his daily appearances in the lab to 'check' on things. He came with a smile, a word, always a note of caring that you felt was real. And then when he came to 'visit' while working for Mayo it was always fun to see him. He will be missed. My condolenses to his wife, children and their children and all family and friends who will feel the void.
May he rest in peace!

Bruce was a GREAT friend to so many.  We had a wonderful camaraderie.  We could talk about anything.  He loved life and all who knew him â€“ know one of the BEST!  I remember our install trips â€“ talking in the car, on that two hour Chicago traffic ride to Univ. of Chicago, on the road in St. Louis or traveling the back roads to Rockford.  They are memorable times.  We talked of food, religion, fishing at the cabin in Hayward, our families, SCOTLAND, and of course, the love of his life, Ruth.  He was a true friend and will be missed.  To Pork Chop, as he liked to call himself --- from Lamp Chop, as he affectionately called me,  May the peace and love of God be with you and your family.

Bruce showed great strength maintaining his spirit and humor when he was with the entire Mayo group in March.  I'm glad many of us had the honor of celebrating his birthday with him during that week.  He was a wonderful guy and great colleague.  Thoughts and prayers are with Ruth and family.

Bruce, you taught me a lot in the short time that I knew you. Gifted with not only knowledge and wit, but with a heart that was genuine. I wish I could convey how thankful I am for all that you have done for me and the help you have given me during the past 3+ years. It comforts me to know that you are no longer hurting and that you are in God's hands now. I will miss you buddy!

My sincere condolences to Bruce's family.  I enjoyed my opportunities to work with Bruce and am proud to have called Bruce an MML colleague.  Bruce positively influenced the lives of many within the MML family.  He will long be remembered for his jovial spirit.

Bruce was a Laboratory Director at Northwest Community Hospital and hired me in 1977.  I remember his greeting on my first day of work, "Welcome to the zoo!".  I noticed that he said that famous line to all new comers!  He made me laugh every time he came around.  His jokes, I would say the Scottish sense of humor, sometimes I needed a couple of minutes to figure out then laugh, sometimes I laughed right away but then I thought of it more and laughed even more...
Bruce had a warm heart inside but in the outside he always looked "cool".  I remember in my early days when, at the hardest time of my life, I needed to work more hours in order to make ends meet, Bruce let me get retrained for 2 weeks, and from there I was able to work all over the place.  Pretty soon my schedule was full, I wasn't able to take on more inquiries for fill ins!
I am sad that Bruce is no longer here.  But I remember my mother had told me the expressions from my old country:  if the person was young, she said "Oh he/she is free of debt, the debt that he/she does not owe any more debt from this life".  If the person was sick, the expression goes, " He/she does not have to suffer or endure anymore".  
I miss Bruce already!  His physical appearance is no longer here but his spirit will live on...  I pray for his peace and Ruth and the Family.

Dear Bruce,
You hired me at Northwest Community Hospital in 1989 as your Blood Bank Supervisor and through the years inspired me to be a better leader and mentor as you were to me.  Thanks for all the great memories and for even opening your home to your lab team to brainstorm ideas and to allow us to be a stronger and a greater laboratory.  You always treated us as family and made us laugh whenever we were stressed.  You were and are a one of kind gem and I will never forget you.  When you left NCH, there was a great void that no one could fill, but it was so great seeing and working together with you again at NCH when joined the Mayo team. 

  May your teachings, wit, and great people skills always shine through others that you have  touched along the way. I am so honored to have been a part of your journey. 

My sincerest sympathies to Ruth who was the love of his life, his children whom he loved and was so proud of, and to his entire family.  May his memory be eternal and bring you peace.

Even though he's gone

I worked with Bruce at the NCH laboratory in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.  He was the most personable Lab Manager I have ever worked with, as he made a point of regularly walking through all the departments in the lab and saying hello (and of course something to make you smile)....I will never forget his most wonderful spirit!

Bruce and I would always talk fishing in Wisconsin because we shared the same admiration for the sport and the outdoors. He'll always be in my thoughts.

We will miss Bruce's enthusiasm for life and happy demeanor.  His humor always put a smile on our face :)  Our prayers for Bruce and the family he leaves behind.  Our donation to Prostate Cancer Foundation is in Bruce's memory to help contribute towards a cure for our husbands, brothers, fathers, and friends who are inflicted with this disease. I had occasion to meet Bruce when he was the Mayo representative for St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.  He was always professional and very personable.........two essential traits for establishing good working relationships with clients.  There are many who knew Bruce better than I but it did not matter to Bruce whether he knew you for many years or if he had just met you for the first time.  He always treated his clients as colleagues and friends.  It is no surprise to me that so many people have cited his smile and laughter as his most memorable traits.  Bruce had an impact on so many laboratory professionals and he will definitely be missed by all who knew him.  My thoughts are with all of you at this time.

My sincere condolenses to Bruce's family. I had the great privilege, as a Mayo colleague, to work closely with Bruce while he covered SW Michigan. Many of our conversations centered on his family. Bruce's many professional talents, with his personal warmth, great humor and wit, quickly endeared him to all. Bruce will not be forgotten and we will all miss him.  Jim

For 27 years I have worked in the laboratory business and I have Bruce to thank for that.  Bruce was my first boss and mentor when he hired me at Northwest Community Hospital back in 1985.  He was from the "old generation" in regards to knowing how to treat his employees with respect.  I was lucky enough to get to know Bruce outside of work and I don't believe there has ever been a person that has loved fishing more than Bruce did.  Michelle, Andy and Megan your father had one of the best sense of humors that I have ever known.  He loved the three of you more than anything.  These last couple of years I was lucky enough to reconnect with your dad and his eyes would just light up when he talked about all of his grandkids.  Ruth, you gave Bruce a second chance of being a good husband and for that he always loved you for.  One day, six years ago, when I had just started at Evanston Hospital I was working in the lab when I heard this familiar voice from the past.  Sure enough it was Bruce, and from then on whenever he would pay a visit to Evanston we would always touch base and talk about our families and that connection with Bruce I will always be greatful for.  Bruce, you were a great boss, a terrific mentor, and a special friend, you will be missed by everyone.
