Grandma
Grandma, you nourished us.
You gave us all love and smiles and hugs and pinches and kisses and laughter and food. Lots and lots of delicious food. Stuffed shells, garlic bread, buttered green beans, lasagna. But when it came to yourself, it was always "just a sliver."

You taught us lessons.

Once, at a sleepover, 3 of your granddaughters were jumping on your bed, accidentally knocked down the crucifix hanging on the wall and decided to put it under the pillow to hide the evidence. You found it later when you were tucking them in, laughed about it then, and continued to laugh about it, for many years to follow.

You wanted us to be happy.

During another visit, you sent the kids to the dime store with Grandpa and gave them each a dollar to spend. They walked over the creaky floors and filled little green plastic baskets with brightly wrapped candies but Grandpa insisted on a Hershey bar instead. And then when they came back to the house with long faces lamenting for the candy cigarettes, you turned them right around and took them right back to the dime store to get what they wanted.

You made us feel loved.

At the end of a phonecall, when I'd say "bye, love you Gram," you'd respond with a louder voice than before and I could tell you were talking through gritted teeth to add emphasis. You'd say "I love you so much I could just squeeze you and squeeze you."

And squeeze you did.

With your hugs and kisses and pinches, especially the pinches, you made us feel warm in ways only you could. And how many warm blankets do we all have at home thanks to your handiwork? It seemed there was a new one crafted for every occasion.

You were always praying for us.

No matter what the issue, big or small, you were praying for us. We'd say "Grandma I have a big test tomorrow." You'd say "You're in my prayers." Or "I have jury duty next week." And you'd say "I'll pray for you." Or even "Yeah, Grandma, my friend had a flat tire." And you'd still say, "I'll say a prayer for her."

And you had some characteristic sayings. I have a favorite. In instances where others might say "of course," or "without a doubt," for you it was always "and how."

Well Grandma, there are 4 generations of people here in this room celebrating you and remembering you. How we loved you, how you loved us, how you helped us become who we are.

 It was always a special blessing to have Emily lector for our Catholic Communion services.  She read beautifully, with excellent clarity, and with so much love!  Later on, when she was in the health center, it brightened my heart to see her coming with that glowing smile on her face each Sunday! We will all miss her and her wonderful daughter and son-in- law who brought her -- along with another healthcare friend--and assisted others in the group too. ( thank you!)
  I am sure  Emily is celebrating an early EASTER with our RIsen Lord Jesus and will be sending many blessings to her family and friends that she loved so much. Please know that my  love, prayers and sympathy with you.

Aunt Em was my favorite Aunt
She always talked to you like an adult and was interested in what you had to say.That was a big deal for a little kid trying to figure things out.
I'm a better person because of her and the world is a better palce because she was here

Grandma Emmy, I shared do many memories in my life with you.  From the hand made puzzles I would get in the mail to all the warm afghans, mittens and hats you made to keep me warm.  Learning to cook and eat well is a huge legacy.  Spending time with you and Grandpa between work and school listening to stories of your life made my life just that much richer.  I love you both so much and you will be missed every day of my life.

I am sorry for the loss of your Mother. Your family has been so blessed having your Mom. She will never be forgotten, and will always be missed. Hoping the memories you have shared with her will bring smiles to all.

I got to know Emily during my visits to Friendship Village.  Emily was a very sweet lady who was always happy to stop and chat for a few minutes.  She talked about her children with such pride.  I know she will be greatly missed by many.
