John Paul Standley, 96, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 27, 1927 to William and Regina (McCabe) Standley.
A lifelong faithful Catholic, he graduated from St. Mary’s of Redford High School in 1945, served in the U.S. Navy at the conclusion of WWII, and while working full-time, attended college at Wayne State University. In 1956, he married the love of his life Shirley (Korth, d. 2007), and they raised their family in Birmingham, Michigan. He was a good provider, enjoyed coaching youth baseball and an active family life. Ultimately retiring from a 20+ year accounting career at Ford Tractor Operations in 1986, he and Shirley traveled in the US and enjoyed a community of friends.
He was blessed with a long healthy life after retirement, enjoying his artistic passions of sketching and painting, and continued to golf, bike and hike well into his 80's. After moving to Crystal Lake in the 1990s he was very close to his eldest son’s family, extended family and especially involved with his grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, of 51 years. He is survived by two of his four sisters Katherine and Barbara, his two sons Mark and Bill, his 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
