

Ruth V. Day passed away peacefully on May 4, 2015 in Island Lake, IL at the age of 90. She was born November 5, 1924, in Windom, MN to Andrew and Anna (Hommerberg) Swenson, the youngest of seven children.
After a childhood spent on the southwest Minnesota prairie, her family moved to Duluth, MN. After graduation from Duluth Central High School, she earned a BA in Music from Duluth Teacher’s College. Soon after, she became engaged to a young General Electric engineer, Lee Day. They were married in 1948, a union that produced three children.
Music was a prominent force in her life and she was active in many musical endeavors in Duluth including opera, symphony, Matinee Musicale, the Buckhorns and several choirs. A highlight of her life involved directing the Chapel Choir at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church for many years. Through this choir she developed many strong friendships and positively influenced many young people.
Her faith in Christ was central in her life. She leaves a strong legacy centered on the redeeming power of faith in Christ and the importance of family. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, five siblings, and her husband, Lee. She is survived by her children Rebecca (Bruce) Grau of Island Lake, IL, Douglas (Luz) of Shoreview, MN, and Brad (Chris) of Bellingham, WA, 12 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, one sister, Mildred Hallberg of Vancouver, WA, and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial gathering will be held at Glen Avon in Duluth at a later date.
