Cheri - I wish I could be with you today to squeeze your hand and give you a hug. That will have to wait until the Clark family reunion. I have posted a poem I wrote about David and you on the Guest Book and your FB. Really feeling this one for you, my dear cousin.

How did I know him? 
What standing have I to speak of his passing? 

Simply put, through the light in Cousin Cheri's eyes,
and by the laughter he drew from her lips,
in the way that he seemed like a Clark right off
to me at our 2013 family reunion,
attending to the karaoke game with gusto, 
reaching out with encouragement to a tuneless me
as I dared a duet with Cheri's mom on "Pretty Woman."
Telling me after, "You could be in my choir."
Okay, so he needed loud if not on key,
but it was a compliment generously given.
And there in that moment I had to laugh. 
 
This was a man who liked to laugh out loud.
He seemed a man I'd enjoy laughing with again
as time went on and we got to know each other better.

Then the news. The awful sad news. Gone.
Suddenly and irrevocably lost to sweet Cheri, and to us.
No family reunion replay in 2015. Just absence.
Perhaps some lilting smiles of remembrance.

There indeed are times God seems inscrutable to me. 
Why allow such deep joy, only to snatch it away? 
Is this some sort of Heaven-sent metaphor
to instruct us on the fragility of life?
We already knew that, didn't we?
Why couldn't Cheri have 10 years with David, even 5?
In any frame of justice that I might declare,
I would say this and say it loudly - 
My sweet cousin Cheri deserves better than this.

But that's just me wanting to protect Cheri
and I have too little to offer in that regard.
So like the beggar I am, I turn to the tune
it would have been my pleasure to hear David sing:

"Angels, descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love."

I know very little but I do know this.
Love once given or received never departs.
Love is not lost at all, so long as there are whispers
and echoes of mercy from the Creator 
who gives us our longing for reunion
in a family more glorious than we can imagine.

It is by this faith that Clarks & Christophers hold,
not just for the moments, whatever their duration
in which we are allowed to love here in our flesh,
but for the eternal glory of living before our Lord,
where David now harmonizes with the angels.

And perhaps when we feel that little whisper echoing
so quietly in our souls in the days remaining to us,
not a note out of place at the lead of the Divine Conductor,
it will be David calling to me, to us, to be still and quiet
and enjoy with him now the "perfect delight." 

In a whisper, I can hear David saying: 
"Hey, Steve, come join my choir."

Cheri, Julie shared with me of David's passing.  My heart goes out to you and your family; please know you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dearest Cheri and family, my heart is seared with deep and severe pain at the news of this loss. For David I would say, "you will be missed in the physical, felt in the soul, and celebrated in the spirit that is forever."

David has been around me my whole life. Our families were very close. We will all miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with his girls and grandchiledren.
