Eris Catherine Mitchell was born to Alonzo and Nodie McGriff Mitchell in the Brooklyn community on January 26, 1927. She married Addison Zertis Jones on August 21, 1943 in Baileyton, AL, and they were blessed to be married for 62 years. She worked in sales in Birmingham and Cullman, while also raising their three boys. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Eris was a dedicated member of Vestavia Primitive Baptist Church for 50+ years. She loved gardening, traveling, cooking, visiting friends and neighbors, and watching the Atlanta Braves and Alabama football.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Zelna Edwards, Virginia Whited, Iva Lee “Boots” Dunlap, and Melba Moseley; three brothers, Henry Mitchell, Shirel Mitchell, and Thirel Mitchell; her husband, Addison Jones; and a son, Frankie Mitchell Jones.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Judy) Jones and Steve Jones, and a very special daughter-in-law, Cindy Jones. She was proud to be grandmother to eight grandchildren, Sandy (Billy) Phillips, Mitch (Kathy) Jones, Paula (Rodney) Jones, Zach Jones, Jonathan Jones, Katelyn Jones, Cassie (Brent) Bowen, and Tyler Jones. She was also blessed with seventeen great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, one special sister, Judy Parker, and a host of treasured nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life visitation for Eris will be Thursday, March 24, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Moss-Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Avenue, N.W., Cullman, Alabama 35055. A celebration of life funeral service will be Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 12:00 PM, at Moss Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Avenue, N.W., Cullman, Alabama 35055. Interment will follow at New Hope #2 Cemetery, Holly Pond, AL.
