Beverly Allen Harpine

Beverly Allen Harpine went Home to be with the Lord on December 23, 2023. Bev was born in the Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg on September 18, 1934. He spent most of his life living in Culpeper VA, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Aylor. Bev was helping a friend put up a TV antenna on the roof and saw her standing next door in her yard, but they never spoke. He drove back across the mountain, walked in and told his mother… “I’ve seen the girl I’m gonna marry.” ” Where did you meet her?” she asked. “I haven’t met her yet but I’m gonna marry her.” His mother told him he was crazy, but crazy or not, that’s what happened, and Bev and Margaret were married on October 23, 1955. They had two children, Debbie and Greg.

In his teenage years, a horse named Rex was both a companion and mode of transportation, but later in life his companion was a buff cocker spaniel named Molly. According to Margaret, Molly was always at the ready for a ride in the little grey Nissan pickup, and she was also his personal dinner bell.

Bev’s entrepreneurial spirit led him through multiple careers, and owning small businesses. The Virginia State Police was what initially brought Bev to Culpeper, and he worked as a Dispatcher for many years while also serving with the Army National Guard. Later he became a regional salesman for Continental Modular Homes. He was a well-known builder and developer throughout central and northern VA. He opened Culpeper Public Storage, the first self-storage business in the area. Later Bev went back into the justice system as a Magistrate in Culpeper then finished his career retiring from the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office as a Sargent in the jail.

Bev was always very civic minded and dedicated to his community. He was involved in organizing Culpeper Little League baseball with his friends Hencil Hockett and Larry King. They pioneered the building of the original Moore Golf Little League Fields. He was also active in the Culpeper Optimist Club, and along the way he both supported and sponsored Softball and Basketball teams in the Men’s Industrial league.

If nothing else most people knew Bev as an avid gardener. He distributed fruits and vegetables to his friends and neighbors throughout his community. He always strived to have the first tomato of the season, and he and his friend Mason Hutcheson kept tabs on each other’s progress. Bev was often known to start his tomatoes from seed in Margaret’s kitchen window as early as November or December.

He is survived by his loving wife Margaret Harpine, daughter Debbie Blosser of Barboursville, son Greg Harpine of Culpeper; grandchildren Robert C. Blosser V of Richmond, Brooke Mendonsa of Jacksonville FL, Ashton Beard of Culpeper, Caylie Harpine of Culpeper, and Luke Harpine of Culpeper; five great grandchildren Gemma, Reilly, and Carys Mendonsa and Cole and Mary Katherine Blosser. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Jack and Evelyn Harpine, his brother Lawrence, and his sister Cathleen Coffman.
