

Blanche Elizabeth Smith (Betty) Holland, 94, died November 14, 2015, at her home in Culpeper, VA. Born January 11, 1921 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Charles Varnum Smith and Blanche Crossman Smith.
She enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband and family through much of the Eastern U.S. and Canada, with some special trips including the Galapagos Islands and Africa. She was an avid bird watcher, with a life list numbering in the hundreds. She enjoyed growing flowers year-round, and with the help of her children often marketed them at the K Street Farmer’s Market in Washington, DC. She gave much of her time as a member of the Fairfax Hospital Women’s Auxiliary (“Pink Ladies”) and to the Bloomfield Foundation of the Dioceses of Virginia. She was a life-long Episcopalian, and an active member of the Historic Episcopal Church of Little Fork, Rixeyville, VA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick William Holland, Sr., on November 4, 2002. She is survived by her five children, Joanna Holland Ledford of Guthrie, OK; Frederick William Holland, Jr. of Huron, OH; Varnum Smith Holland of Meredith, NH; Archie Stuart Holland, II of Elizabethtown, KY; and Bruce Charles Holland of Culpeper, VA. She also leaves seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Little Fork Church on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 11:00 with burial in the Little Fork Burying Grounds. Rev. Brad Jackson will officiate.
