On Monday, April 13, 2026 at Noon, Charles Howard Hutchind, age 79, of Culpeper, Virginia, passed from life to death with his wife at his side after battling Hodgkins’ Lymphoma. His eyes opened wider than they had been in the previous few months, and he stretched out his left arm high over his head as he looked up in that direction as though he were seeing something amazing, but it remains a mystery as he could not speak well the last few weeks. Then his arm flopped to his side as his spirit left his flesh. At one point several weeks before passing, he asked who all the people were in the room and after being told no one else was there, he said, “I see Eddie Spencer”. Edward Odell Spencer had been a close teenage friend who was killed in Vietnam in 1968. [https://www.honorstates.org/profiles/299533/]
Born March 11, 1947 to Howard Benjamin and Peneta Nicholopoulas Hutchind, née Georgoulakos in Charlottesville, VA, his parents had only arrived in Culpeper from Danielson, Connecticut a few months prior to his birth and were given refuge by both the Silas Carder and Harold Geest families for which they were extremely grateful. He attended Culpeper County High School and began working with his father in construction-home repairs work at the tender age of 15 after the death of his mother from colon cancer in 1962. The father/son duo was known for many years as Howard Hutchind & Son and Charlie eventually got his Class A Contractor’s License with the help of Otis Burke, a lifelong customer and friend [https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/culpeper-va/otis-burke-10383688].
Charlie enjoyed working with his hands for over 63 years and often pointed out properties where he had built additions, remodeled or done other repair work when out for Sunday afternoon rides down through the years. He took pride in his handi-work and greatly appreciated his workmates throughout his long career, one in particular was a close friend who worked with him for over 50 years, Benny Johnson [https://www.preddyfuneralhomes.com/obituaries/benjamin-francis-johnson]. He was pre-deceased by his parents [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/51598115/howard-b-hutchind], maternal brother Peter N. Hutchind [https://centralvirginiaobits.com/obituary/peter-hutchind/], Brightwood, VA; two paternal sisters: Avis Irene Coderre, née Hutchins [https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/norwichbulletin/name/avis-coderre-obituary?id=18518169] (her husband John) [https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/john-coderre-obituary?pid=188547690], and Sally Alice Budzielek, née Hutchins [https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/sally-budzielek-obituary?pid=167765722] both in Danielson, CT; as well as his niece, Tina Kay Hutchind Ordonez-Cerrato, Norfolk, VA; and brother-in-law, Joseph Richard Curtis, Culpeper, VA. He is survived by his wife of 53 ¾ years, Mary Ellen Hutchind, née Curtis, his three children and seven grandchildren: Charles Benjamin Hutchind (Karen with Zoë, Aidan & Claire), Locust Grove, VA; Nicholas Curtis Hutchind (Jessica with Spencer, Phoenix, Liam, & Sebastian), Bedford, VA; and Molly Suzanne Hutchind, Culpeper, VA. He is also survived by his Sister-in-Law Betty Lou Hutchind, née Alger and Great Nephew Alexander Augustine Ordonez-Cerrato both of Brightwood, VA; and his siblings-in-law: Ben Curtis, Jr. (Amy) & Susan Calamos (John) along with many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles Howard Hutchind’s memory may be made to any building project or US Disaster Relief via SAMARITAN’S PURSE, [https://www.samaritanspurse.org/our-ministry/nam/]. May God be glorified in his passing!
