Edgar Walker “Sonny” Sims, Jr, 90, of Locust Grove, Virginia passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024 at the University of Mary Washington Hospital. Sonny was born to Mr. and Mrs. Edgar W. Sims, on October 18th, 1933 at the family home in Rapidan. He attended and played football for Virginia Tech and was a United States Army veteran. Sonny farmed in the
same community his whole life, managing the family farm near Rapidan, where he raised his three children, cattle, pigs and corn. He and Jeannette also worked at the Fredericksburg Livestock Market for many years. After retirement, they moved to the Locust Grove area of Orange County.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Sims Pearson and husband, Jeff, of Culpeper, son, Joseph S. Desper, Jr. and wife, Amanda of Zebulon, NC, and daughter, Tammy Lynn Desper of Charlottesville, VA. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, his sister, Mrs. Robert Loving, of Goldsboro, NC and his kitty, Miss Puddin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Jeannette Kirby Sims, first wife, Patricia Jones Irwin, his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Sims, his son, Edgar Walker Sims, III, and his son in law, Jeff DeShields.
Sonny was always a Nascar fan and loved the opportunity to go to the race with Jeannette wearing his hat and sunglasses. In earlier years, Sonny and Jeannette enjoyed hitting the road. They enjoyed a couple of trips to Branson but a highlight was travelling to North Carolina to visit “Sis” Betty and to see their grandchildren participate in some of their many activities. Sonny loved time with his family and friends, but especially enjoyed family get togethers at Cindy and Jeff’s home and recent trips to the Fincher’s bay home in Ophelia with Cindy and Jeff. Sonny was a larger-than-life man with a huge heart and great love for his family and friends. He took great pride in being PaPa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren that he loved so dearly. His kitty was a source of joy for him and she loved him to the point of not ever letting anyone else see her. He loved being outdoors, driving his pickup truck and tractors and clearing the snow from all the neighbors’ driveways. He made friends everywhere he went because he was straightforward, honest, dependable, and he was a good man.
Sonny was a member of Fairfax Masonic Lodge #43, Culpeper, Virginia.
We are all blessed to have known him and to have been loved by him.
