
Mary Ellen Broyles Brown, 101, passed away peacefully at Our Father's House Christian Home in Culpeper County, Virginia on Sunday, January, 4, 2015 after a short illness. Born on July 2, 1913 near the Robinson River area of Madison County, and a long- time resident of
Culpeper, Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Albert Brown, and her parents, James Wesley and Annie Blanche Wayland Broyles, her brothers: Harmon Eustace and Wayland Thomas, and sisters: Alice Elizabeth Marshall and Eva Blanche Woods. Mary leaves
behind her younger brother, James Henry Broyles with his wife, Hazel, of Culpeper, along with many other loved family members and friends.
In 1915 Mary's family purchased a farm and moved to Brandy Station from Madison. She and her siblings traveled three miles by horse and buggy to the one-room Brandy School where she graduated in a class of nine in 1931. As there was no work near home, Mary moved to
Washington, D.C. to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC} Camp providing work orders to men building the Blue Ridge Parkway, the US Department of Engraving "putting faces on the dollar bill", the US Census, and in the Accounting Department of the US Treasury.
Mary and John were married at the family's farm in 1935. They returned to live in Culpeper County in 1947 and purchased Sunset View Farm, which they owned and operated together. Mary was employed by Northern Piedmont Electric in 1949 (now Rappahannock Electric
Cooperative). Mary retired from the Accounts Receivable Department after 28 years.
Mary and h John enjoyed life together: working on the farm, collecting antiques, gardening and cooking. Mary also enjoyed maintaining family genealogy records, traveled with friends, and was a pure Redskin fan. In 2013, Mary enjoyed celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends at Our Father's House, and was recognized with Culpeper's "Mary Brown Day". She was an active and devoted member of the Culpeper Baptist Church, where she attended regularly until her later years.
Funeral services will be held in Culpeper Baptist Church, Friday, January 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends during a time of fellowship in the Fellowship Area of the Church immediately following the service. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery after the time of fellowship.
