Payton W. Young

Payton W. Young, age 82, of Elkwood, Virginia passed away July 28, 2024, at his home in Elkwood, VA. He was born in Troutdale, VA on April 23, 1942 to Claude and Edith Young, who moved the family to Elkwood in 1946. Payton graduated from Culpeper High School in 1960 and married Veral Barker in 1969 at Lael Baptist Church in Lignum. After retiring from Fairfax County in 1995 and the passing of his mother, Payton and Veral moved to the farm in Elkwood where he was raised.

A very proud son of our Lord, and resident of Culpeper county for the majority of his life, Payton leaves behind a large number of lifelong friends and strong ties to the community. He worked tirelessly on the family farm, fully restored the house and devoted much of his time to Trinity Baptist Church in Warrenton as well as the Culpeper Ruritan Club.

Payton is survived by his wife of 55 years Veral Young, son Damon Young (Katie) of Jacksonville FL, daughter Vicki Almay (Ted) Efland NC, sister Rozelle Amick (Grover) of Elkwood VA, sister-in-law Charlotte Young (Ed) of Elkwood VA, granddaughters Kaylin Chugg (Clint), Claire Von Almay (Seth), five great grandchildren and Lola Trent and Tiffany Steinke who he loved so much he considered his adopted daughters.

In addition to his parents, Payton is preceded in death by his brothers Ed Young and Dennis Young.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 2, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Clore English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, VA.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until service time.
