

Raymond Lee Elgin of Rixeyville, VA departed this life July 18, 2015. Raymond was born in Washington, D.C. on November 10, 1934 of parents Lee C. and Mary Hash Elgin. He leaves his wife, Carolyn Mitchell Harry Elgin, of their home and his children, Carolyn K. Elgin of Rutherfordton, NC and son, Robert S. Elgin and wife, Michelle, of Middleburg, VA, and his stepson, Phillip Harry and wife Sondra, of Spotsylvania, VA, and their children, Nate Harry and Kirstie Harry and stepson Kevin Harry and wife, Laurel, of Salisbury, NC, and their children, Lila Harry and Zeb Harry. He leaves also his brother George S. Elgin and wife, Donna, and their children, Keith, Kenny, Carla and Chrissie and their respective families of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Raymond graduated from Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, VA in the early 1950s. He married Nancy Scott Thurston in the mid-1950s. Raymond served in the US Naval Reserves, Seabees, for a number of years and worked as a Lineman and Supervisor for Virginia Power in Alexandria, VA. He raised his family in Alexandria, moving to Warrenton, VA in 1968.
In the early 1980s he moved to Culpeper, VA where he was employed as a Lineman and eventually retired from the Town of Culpeper Electric Department.
In 1998, he married Carolyn Mitchell Harry, with whom he shared a happy and fulfilling life. They have many friends and an extended family of Elgins, Hashes, Harrys, and Mitchells. Raymond joined the Culpeper United Methodist Church and participated as an usher and member of the administrative board.
Raymond and Carolyn traveled throughout the continental US and Alaska, Europe, and the British Isles, which they both truly enjoyed. They also lived part-time in Costa Rica for several years where they had many friends in the local and expat communities.
Raymond was an active member of the Salem Ruritan Club and volunteered as Procurement Agent for their activities for many years.
Raymond spent his free time in outside activities--gardening, hunting, fishing, and as a woodsman. He worked hard all his life, constantly active and engaged. He will be remembered for his winning smile, his kind, quiet manner, his generosity to others of both time and talents, the love of his family and friends and finally, the courage he displayed during the last years of his illness.

A memorial service is planned for August 9, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Culpeper United Methodist Church, in Culpeper, VA. Visitation with the family in the Fellowship Hall will follow the service.
