Born on January 30, 1951, at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, Bill spent his early childhood in Norfolk, Japan and Formosa (Tiawan) before returning stateside in 1956 with his family to North Springfield, Virginia. He graduated from Annandale High School, Class of 1969.
Bill began his public service early, volunteering with Annandale Volunteer Fire Department from 1967 to 1970. After relocating to Madison, VA in 1971 to assist with his mother’s farm in Leon, he married his wife, Gina, in 1972 and together they began building their family. From 1978 through 1990, Bill and Gina operated B&G Diversified, a commercial property maintenance business that provided employment to many local residents.
In 1991, Bill shifted his home and career path to Culpeper, VA where he founded Central Virginia Locksmith, a business he owned and operated with pride for more than three decades. His work served the greater Culpeper community and several surrounding counties. In the mid-2000’s, as time allowed, he returned to fire service with the Rapidan Volunteer Fire Department receiving many honors, including two Fireman of the Year awards.
Bill was a remarkably intelligent and straightforward man with a no-nonsense approach to life. He carried wit, a sense of humor, and a grumpy charm that became part of his signature presence. His observations were sharp, his instincts keen, and his humor — often unexpected — left an impression on everyone who crossed his path.
He is survived by his wife, Gina; daughters Carolyn M. Johnson and Jennifer A. Campbell; and raised Robert M. Johnson as his own son; brothers Kenneth A. Johnson and Dr. Edgar B. Johnson; 6 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Jack and Phyllis (Aprile) Johnson, and his son, Billyjack Johnson.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to the medical teams at UVA Culpeper Hospital, UVA Haymarket Medical Center, The Culpeper, and Autumn Care for their dedicated care and compassion.
Funeral services will be held at Clore-English Funeral Home on Saturday, February 21, 2026. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a service to follow. A brief burial will take place at Novum Baptist Church Cemetery, with a reception to follow at a location to be announced.
