Alvin David King was the youngest of six children born to Johnny and Josephine King on February 17, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a child, Alvin easily made friends and never had arguments and fights on the playground. Alvin was baptized, educated, and worshipped at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in New Orleans.
He met the love of his life, Hilma Mae Davis, at his niece's birthday party. Four years later, they married on June 16, 1956. They had one daughter, Shelia Marie born in May of 1957.
After the birth of their daughter, the newlyweds made a fateful decision to leave New Orleans and move to California. Alvin set out ahead to find work and a place to live and sent for his family four months later. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Alvin worked as a parking attendant at a restaurant and as a shipping clerk at a record distributor. On a tip from his cousin, he applied for a job at Pacific Athletic Co. where he managed the shipping department until his retirement and maintained a friendly relationship with his employers, the Edelstein family, until his death.
Alvin and Hilma were devoted parishioners of St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church in Inglewood, CA. They were active members of the Miracle Workers Senior Citizen Club, Transfiguration 50+ Club and the St. Brigid Young at Heart Senior Ministry. Alvin was also a block captain in the Around the Block Neighborhood Watch Club. Alvin was a member in good standing of Transfiguration Knights of Peter Claver Council 220, Los Angeles, CA.
Alvin was passionate about sports, and became a true fan of his adopted home town’s teams: He was an avid supporter of the Rams, the Dodgers and Lakers. When the Rams moved to St. Louis, he fully embraced the USC Trojans as his hometown football team. He loved westerns and classic gangster films, and he was always able to figure out who-done-it in every detective drama.
Alvin suffered a stroke after spending, in his own words, "a really good day with my two best girls". Our Lord and Savior called him home on November 27, 2015. He was surrounded by family and friends and made a peaceful transition.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Josephine King, brother Isaac, and sisters Pearl Bartholomew and Wilma White.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 59 years Hilma; daughter Shelia Garrison; grandchildren: Joel Garrison, LCpl. Bradley Garrison, USMC, and Dawn Garrison, as well as his brother John King and wife Dolores, sister Deasmor Dorsey, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law, cousins, Brother Knights of Peter Claver and numerous dear friends.
Arrangements under the direction of Holy Cross Mortuary, Culver City, CA.
