Clarence David Kussner was born in Montreal, Canada on April 6, 1940 to Fanny Swift Kussner and Morris Kussner. He was the middle of three children, in between his older brother Ralph and his younger sister Beatrice.
He did not have an easy childhood but always seemed to have happy memories to share about his youth. In 1958 he joined the Canadian Navy which stationed him in Churchill, Manitoba and on various ships, where he worked as a message technician, intercepting and making records of messages sent by other countries. He also played hockey as a goalie on the Navy team.
In 1959 he met a young Renee Perrault on a blind date at a holiday party, and the connection was instantaneous. As Renee loves to recount, he kissed her at the door immediately! She thought that he was a “fast boy” … he said she was standing under the mistletoe. He liked to claim that she knew she was under the mistletoe but the truth might never be known.
Due to their different religious upbringings, there was drama in both families when Clarence and Renee decided to get married in 1963. When Clarence learned in 1964 that he was entitled to US citizenship through his father, he caught a ride with a friend who was headed to California, where he got a job and prepared a home for his young family. Leigh Ann was born in Montreal in April 1965 while Clarence was in Los Angeles. A few weeks later, after flying to Los Angeles with her newborn, Renee unceremoniously plopped Leigh Ann into his arms and said “Here, she’s yours!” Four years later, in 1969, they had another beautiful baby girl, Michelle.
Clarence eventually found his way to a career in life insurance sales, which he excelled at. He and Renee both worked hard to provide for the family. Clarence joined the Culver City Masons in the late 1970’s and found his perfect community there. He served in multiple offices including Lodge Master, and was known for always being caring and helpful to his fellow lodge brothers.
In 1994, his granddaughter Alyssa was born, who, as we all know, he completely adored. He was perhaps the most doting and devoted grandfather of all time.
Clarence and Renee enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends and family, and eating at their favorite spots around town, where they became friendly with the restaurant staff.
Clarence was an outgoing, optimistic, kind and helpful person who could talk to anyone, and he loved to tell awful jokes. He will be greatly missed.
