I had an opportunity to visit my grandfather on one of my last visits to Dalhousie.  He met his great granddaughter (Taylor) for the first time.  She was 7 months old.  He was so excited and proud and he insisted on holding her for as long as she would allow.  I was delighted to see how happy the visit made him.  It touched my heart when I was told he kept a picture of that visit with him.  I know you are at peace, your message was received.  Your memory remains with us.

Monique, Barbara Brophy(Mum), and I want to extend our sincerest and deepest sympathies to the Johnson Family. We loved Charlie as a friend over the last 20 years or more. His sense of humour, and unending support for Mum was second to none. We will all miss Charlie, and are so saddened by your loss. Our thought and prayers are with you all.

Although I could not have been much older than 4 or 5, I have clear memories of the day Charlie moved in with our family in Dalhousie. He took me tabogganing behind the Chaleaur Inn. I was so excited that I finally had an older brother who seened to like me and be interested in me. That warm feeling on my part (which extends to his family) and interest on his, stayed with me throughout the years  and characterized our conversations when we would run in to each other on my frequent visits home during my college days. I'm heartened to hear that he found more peace in his life and his mind in recent years. Brian

Charlie Johnson….
Survived by four great children, he was a dedicated worker and head of the bull gang in the mill. 
Nick-named   ‘the godfather' by friends.
Dad, thanks for the good common sense on life.

     I have some fond memories of my father. He was witty and intelligent, and enjoyed talking about current events, especially anything to do with politics and science. He rather people 'shoot straight from the hip' and not 'beat around the bush'. 
     One of my favorite memories is when we all stayed at a cabin in Matapedia. We were a family again for one whole week. He was so funny. He made us laugh and laugh. I still prepare my boiled eggs the way he showed me that week, cut them down the center and use a spoon to scoop out each half. 
     He taught me to eat my vegetables (especially the green ones), not to sign anything too quickly, and not to count my chickens before they hatch.
     He was a good and kind man. He could be 'quick to anger', especially with his diabetes high and lows, but he was also quick to forgive and to apologize. He loved his children, Barb Brophy and all her children, his Aunt Margaret and Uncle Jerry Arseneault and their family, and his friends. 
     I am so grateful that Dad was content in his last years, and died knowing that he was loved. What more can anyone ask for?

My father and I had many conversations and we became very close.  He had such a wonderful sense of humour.  He was interested in world politics and kept informed about my region so we could share our opinions.  It brings me peace and joy that my father and I were able to express our love and he knew he was in my family daily prayers.

'My first memory  of Charlie is when he came to stay with us as a young man about 20 or so and i was maybe 4 or 5 years old. He had come from St Andrews by the Sea and was moving to Dalhousie to get a job in the mill. Charlie was my mother's nephew and my first cousin. HIs mother had died at birth so he was brought up by his aunts and remained in touch with them over the years. I remember that he was very quiet but i liked him because he would take the time to play with me and my brother. Charlie only stayed with us for a little while but when he  stopped by he would sometimes ask me to play the piano and he would sing the song Whispering Hope. He was a good singer could  sing harmony. As time went by he married and became a father. His children Susan, Louise, Jimmy and Johnny were all very special to us. I'm thinking of them now and sending my sincere sympathies. I also want to let them know that I have photos that they might want.   Cousin Lynda
