Angelita Torrez-Gomez was born on August 22, 1927 and passed away on December 17, 2012. She was born in Dallas, Texas, just before the Great Depression and survived, helping raise her eleven other siblings. She lived a very fulfilling life up until August of 2012, when she became very ill. She would rise at 4:30 am, just like she did in her youth to help her sisters fix a big breakfast, consisting of bacon, eggs, beans and homemade flour tortillas, for her brothers before they would head off to work. She worked at several companies in Dallas, experiencing discrimination just like other Hispanics living in Dallas in the '40s and '50s. But, her hard work ethic and determination to succeed helped her survive those obstacles. She also experienced World War II, racial discrimination of the '60s, the assassination of a President, and September 11, 2001.
She is survived by her son, Ruben Garcia-Lopez; brother, Gonzalo Torres of Dallas, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and a host of church friends. May God bless her and give her peace.
