Born on January 27, 1937, in Waxahachie, Texas, she was the cherished daughter of Adam and Sarah Pickens. Raised in a home rooted in Christian values, Arcenia embraced her spiritual calling early under the guidance of Superintendent and Mother Pharms. Her walk with Christ deepened through the leadership of Elder John Jones and Pastor Leroy Jackson at Parkside Church—later renamed Greater Parkside—where she served faithfully for many years. At Greater Parkside, Mother Combs held numerous roles that reflected her unwavering commitment to ministry. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Usher Board member, Assistant Pastor Wife, Missionary, and dedicated building fundraiser representative. Her steadfast devotion earned her the honor of becoming “Mother of the Church,” a role she fulfilled with grace until her health no longer allowed regular attendance. Even then, she remained a fervent intercessory prayer warrior and a living testament to the healing power of Jesus Christ. Her life was anchored in holiness and guided by Scripture.
Professionally and personally, Mother Combs dedicated herself to caring for others. As both a caregiver and homemaker, she offered compassion and comfort to those around her. She was also known for her talents as a seamstress and baker—gifts that brought joy to many. A passionate collector with an eye for meaningful treasures, she preserved memories that reflected the love she poured into every aspect of her life.
As Matriarch of her family, Mother Combs championed unity and unconditional love. Her legacy is one of faithfulness, strength, and enduring compassion—a foundation upon which future generations will continue to build.
She was preceded in death by her Beloved husband Schurby L. Combs; her parents; sisters Patsy Ruth Pickens, Joyce Walker, Earline Wilson, and Mattie Bisor; brothers Adam Pickens Jr., Raymond Pickens, Issac Pickens, Willie Pickens, Arthur Jr. Pickens, and James Pickens; great-grandson Ser’Corey Jones; and great-great-grandson Cairo Morton.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Charles (Linda) Jones, Herman Jones Jr., and Sandra Combs; grandchildren Corey Jones, Latonya Jones Tolbert (Robert), and Minister Kerry D. Dabney Jr. (Saresia); nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many others whose lives were touched by her prayers and presence.
May the memory of Mother Arcenia Pickens Combs bring peace to all who knew her and serve as a lasting testament to a life lived in faithful service to God.
