Azil Lee Tipps, Jr. was born to Azil Lee Tipps, Sr. and Ellen Judith Williams on January 12. 1961 in
El Paso, Texas. He was the oldest child of four children (2 boys and 2 girls). A product of a Military family, he spent much of his early education traveling with stops in Michigan, Illinois, and Louisiana.
Azil entered Bossier City High School, excelling as an athlete and also playing baritone in the high school band. In 1979, after moving to Dallas, he graduated from David W. Carter High School. He continued his band career momentarily at Texas Southern University and then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Korea working in a temporary duty assignment in dentistry.
A life changing accident ended his military career; however, through rehabilitation, Azil overcame paralysis. He received his associates Degree from Cedar Valley College in 1994 and was awarded a Bachelor Degree in 1999 in Rehabilitation Studies with minor in Psychology from the University of North Texas. Azil had many interests which included jogging, bicycling, and, most recently, kayaking. He assisted with coaching volleyball for a time period at Cedar Valley. He also loved good music of all kinds.
Azil was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, currently serving with the Cold Springs congregation. In connection to the church, he devoted time working with Vacation Bible School as well as volunteering at Camp Ark-la-tex Christian Camp and Pettijohn Springs Christian Camp in Oklahoma. He also volunteered at nursing homes providing communion to the elderly.
Azil had a wonderful smile and a big heart. in addition to his spiritual work, Azil volunteered in the community, specifically working with the Epilepsy Foundation. His Commitment to his work recognized by KDFW Channel 4 where he was acknowledged as one of Clarice Tinsley's "Hometown Heroes" for his commitment and dedication.
Of all his accomplishments, Azil was a proud father and a loving supporter of his children, Jyra Cecelia (Jeannie Tipps) and Chance Jerome (April Mires). He shared baseball trips with them and looked forward to their graduations. He entrusts his legacy with them. Additionally, his loved ones include: Parents, Azil and Ellen Tipps, Sr.; Brother, Myron (Tonya) Tipps; Sisters, Shari (Philip) Kelton, Sr. and Tara Broadus; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
