Azzie Alexander, 83, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, surrounded by those he loved most. A devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, Azzie will be fondly remembered for his gentle spirit, steadfast generosity, and enduring commitment to his family and community.
Born in the small town of Waskom, Texas, on August 21, 1942, to Lamar Johnson and Irene Gordon Alexander, Azzie spent his earliest years learning the values of hard work, resilience, and service to others. He brought those qualities into every chapter of his life, from his professional endeavors to his personal relationships.
On January 18, 1965, Azzie married the love of his life, Emma Jean Alexander, in a ceremony officiated by Reverend Robert C. Lohman. Together, they built a loving home filled with laughter and faith. Their union was blessed with two sons, Dan and Shane, to whom Azzie was a devoted and loving father. Though his beloved Emma preceded him in death, Azzie’s heart remained anchored by her memory through the years.
Azzie’s work ethic was legendary; he dedicated 47 years to Yancey & Camp Companies, where he became known not just for his reliability and skilled hands but also for his friendly presence and willingness to mentor others. Even after retirement, Azzie continued to busy himself with carpentry projects, tending his garden, and, above all, making time for his friends and neighbors.
Deeply rooted in his faith, Azzie was an active churchgoer and cherished member of the New Birth Baptist Church for three decades before joining the Greater Central South Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained involved until his final days. He loved every opportunity to serve, whether it was lending a helping hand to the church or quietly supporting those in need within the congregation and the wider community.
Azzie’s passions were as steady as his character. He found joy outdoors—especially fishing and hunting—and took great pride in teaching his sons and younger family members the skills he’d mastered. His green thumb turned his yard into a bountiful oasis, and his carpentry left lasting works of craftsmanship enjoyed by friends and family alike.
Azzie was preceded in death by his wife, Emma J. Alexander, and brothers Robert Johnson and Lamar Johnson, sisters Carolyn Carter, Beulah Shaw.
Azzie is survived by his sons, Dan Alexander and Shane Alexander; siblings James Davis, Gene Davis, Ruthie Henry, and Jeanette Davis; aunt Zora Roberts and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends, and special friends of the family, Charles White and Wayne Jackson.
A visitation to honor Azzie’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Laurel Land Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 11:am at Greater Central South Missionary Baptist Church. Friends and community members are welcome to join in remembering a life so well lived.
Azzie Alexander’s gentle presence and giving spirit touched many lives. While he will be deeply missed, his legacy of kindness, generosity, and devotion endures in all those who were privileged to know him.
