He attended Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio where he earned many awards, including being a member of the Zouaves Drill Team and Cadet Commander his senior year. After Peacock, Ben attended SMU where he majored in engineering, and lettered in swimming.
In 1964 he left SMU to pursue a career in the construction industry. This took him to Texarkana, TX where he met Paula Record, whom he married in 1965. Ben and Paula had three children, and created a life in Dallas, TX.
During his career in the Utility Construction Industry he served as Texas State President of Association of General Contractors (AGC). He also served as a National AGC Board Member and on several Texas State Committees on Right to Work.
Both Ben and Paula were devoted to their children, attending seven straight years of Bryan Adams High School football games. The “other career” Ben had was being “Mr. Paula” to the many students at Paula’s dancing school. He lovingly endured more than thirty dance recitals and still professed to love them. Following retirement, Ben enjoyed his family. He spent many hours as a devoted “Papa” to his three grandchildren, attending sporting events, performances, and school events.
Preceded in death by his wife, Paula Record Bishop, Ben leaves many loving family members, including children, Tracey Bergfield and son-in-law Brian, Billy Bishop and daughter-in-law Karen Wertz, and Stephany Hale and son-in-law Chad; grandchildren, Mallory and Mackenzie Hale, and Patrick Bergfield; siblings, Barbara Glatfelter, Beth Turner, Brenda Lockie, and Bill Bishop; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be Monday, October 12, 2015 at 10:00am at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 6550 Samuell Blvd, Dallas 75228.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund, or to the charity of your choice.
