Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 5th. Her strength and courage in the face of adversity and illness were inspirations to all who knew her.
Betsy was born November 14, 1918, in Washington, D. C., and we were thrilled to have celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family last fall. She was educated at McKinley High School in Washington, D.C., and received her Associate's Degree from George Washington University. After graduation she worked in the Office of the President of George Washington and later worked as an administrative assistant at the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was there she met the love of her life William Andrew Murphy, Jr. They married on June 10, 1942 and began a lifetime of love and the creation of a wonderful family. Their joint interest in golf and bridge began on their honeymoon and continued until her final days.
While Bill led offices of the F. B. I. as Special Agent in Charge, Betsy led the family and was an active and involved mother to their two daughters, Betsy and Barbara. She was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Church of the Incarnation, Dallas Athletic Club, Dallas Petroleum Club, and the Society of Former Special Agents of the F. B. I.
Survivors include her daughters Betsy Dyke (David), Naples, FL; Barbara Horn, Dallas, TX; Grandchildren Colin Dyke, Reston, VA; Bill Dabney (Monica), Water Valley, MS; Don (DJ) Horn (Stephanie), Rockwall, TX; Ted Dabney(Julie), Shohola, PA; and Julie Johnston(James), Naples, FL. Her great grandchildren include Drew and Will Dabney, Will Horn, Drew and James Dabney, and Mia and James Johnston. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Murphy, son-in-law C. O. (Buck) Horn, Jr., and her grandchildren Sheelagh Dyke and Drew Dabney.
Betsy was the heart of the family, the Enforcer, the Coach and the best mother in the entire world. She also was the best, most devoted and loving grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sorely missed by those who loved her so much.
A visitation will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home on Friday, March 8th from 5pm until 7pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 12pm at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home in the Northwest Highway Chapel.
