

Was a man of few words: son, brother, friend, veteran, Texas A & M graduate, husband, father, business man, tennis player, Boy Scout leader, church founding father, grandfather. These words describe a life well lived; a man well loved.
Dan was born May 23, 1925 in Temple, Texas to Daniel Carlyle and Kathleen Campbell Herndon. He passed away on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2012. He is preceded in death by his parents , as well as his brother, Thomas Clay Herndon. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise Hudson Herndon and his three children: Leslie Daniel Herndon (wife Carmen); Anne Herndon Bradley (husband Balon); and John Carlyle Herndon; his four grandchildren: Michael Daniel and Brian Allen Herndon ; Alison and Katharine Bradley.
Dan graduated from Texas A&M with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1948 after serving in World War II in the14th Armored Tank Division in France and Germany where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He opened his own consulting firm in Dallas in 1953 and worked until his retirement in 2007.
Dan was an Eagle Scout and began volunteering with Boy Scout Troop 70 in 1962. He continued helping for 49 years. He was honored for his service with the prestigious Silver Beaver award.
Dan was an avid and accomplished tennis player. For years, he could be found in the late afternoons at the city courts. He ranked in the top ten Texas players in his age division in the USTA (U S Tennis Association) for 30 years.
Dan and Louise were founding members of the Trinity Episcopal Church and have been active participants in the activities of their church. He led by example, doing whatever job needed doing. He never sought recognition or honors, but people noticed and appreciated his years of devotion. He was a blessing to many.
The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 14th at Trinity Episcopal Church, 12727 Hillcrest, 75230. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either Boy Scout Troop 70, Inc. in care of Charlie Holmes, 2210 Rolling Oak Lane, Garland, TX 75044 or to Trinity Episcopal Church.
