Daniel Andrew Luby died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on June 17, 1946 and raised in Dallas by parents Earl E. Luby and Marge Thompson Luby. Dan was a member of the Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1964 and attended St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin.
Dan's father founded the family business that operated Luby's Cafeterias in North Texas, Arkansas and Colorado. Dan began his working life in the cafeterias, first training at the Denver locations and later managing several locations across the Metroplex and serving as General Manager. He loved his Cafeteria family and forever enjoyed sharing cafeteria stories.
After the sale of the cafeterias, Dan became a commercial real estate broker, working with the Lawrence "Bud" Miller Group and Blackland Properties before joining ECOM Real Estate, where he just celebrated his 45th Anniversary. He loved his ECOM family.
Dan and Carol Ann Victor, his high school sweetheart, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. With her, his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, colleagues and friends, he shared his best gifts: goodness of heart, steady support, calm in a crisis and finding joy in each day. In September 2024, he celebrated the birth of a great-granddaughter. He loved them all.
Dan enjoyed the Colorado mountains in summer, Rockport fishing in fall, New England reunions with the Vermont branch of his family, chef Jacques Pépin cooking shows, noir movies, and SMU football.
He was a longtime parishioner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church where for many years, he fried the fish for Friday Lenten Dinners.
He is predeceased by his parents, as well as and brothers, J. Pat Luby and Richard M. Ball. He is survived by sisters, Mary Ann Waite and husband, Tim of West Rutland, Vermont and Nan Fox and husband, John of Kingsport, Tennessee; wife, Carol Ann Luby; daughter Dana Luby Roark and husband, Conrad; son, Mark Victor Luby and Susan Sutherland; granddaughters, Sarah Roark Estell and husband, Grant, Mallory Roark Gratch and husband Daniel, Kate Luby; grandson, Daniel Andrew Luby; and great-granddaughter, Annabel Gratch.
