Dr. Hildebrand was the kind of personable man who would tell you to get up from the scary dental chair and take you to the waiting room to explain what the beautiful Thomas Kincaid "Paintings of Light" meant to him.  In doing so, he made me comfortable and relaxed enough to get back into that chair.  He trained his staff so professionally and conducted his thriving practice in a manner so befitting of his character.  Dr. Hildebrand served both my husband Everett and myself so well for many long years, and we were blessed to have been referred to him by another very capable dentist when we moved to Dallas from California.  Dr. Hildebrand's outstanding reputation evidently preceded our move.  Our condolences go out to the Hildebrand family and to those closely connected to the doctor who have had to say goodbye to a wonderful man.  Such an impressionable man will be greatly missed.  Thank you, Dr. Hildebrand, for your service and for showing us not only your professional character but also your personal character, as well.  It's a blessing to enjoy good impressions and good memories.  As someone who enjoyed vacations with family on Maui and might understand some of the native language, I'd like to say, "A hui ho...till we meet again."

Dear Carol and the Hildebrand Family:
I tried to reach out to you at the time of David's death but was never able to connect. 
Words can never express my feelings about David and Carol Hildebrand. Two very special people that I will always remember fondly.
David's smile would light up a room anywhere and his caring attitude that he always had for campers and kids that he coached was special.
I had the privilege of working with David at Camp Grady Spruce in 1962 and again  at Camp Martin Johnson a few years later. He was a great staff member and well loved by everyone.
I was away from Texas for about 30 years and did not see much of David during that time but when I did see you and David it was just like old times together.
May God bless you Carol and your family. We lost a giant of a man and he I'll be missed by all of us.

Dear Doc. 

When I was 13, my parents signed me up for a new soccer team, creatively called the Kickers. We lost every game in the first season I played with them. At that age, it was a pretty disheartening experience, and I wanted to quit. My parents refused. So I stayed. 

The next season, one day at practice, our coach brought in some outside help to give us some much-needed guidance. You had no personal connection to our team at the time. But you came that day, and you showed us a few things, and by the end of practice, we somehow felt that, in an hour's time, we had become better players. That was the beginning of my wonderful relationship with you, Doc (you will always be Doc to me). 

You came back the next practice, and the next. We won our first game, and then our second. You kept coming back, and we kept winning. We ended the season undefeated. The energy and spirit you brought to our team was a revelation, and it changed us. We found within ourselves a passion for the game, and a drive to be better. 

You remained our coach. Year after year. As we grew into young women, stronger players, and a stronger team. We won championships. We won tournaments. We matured and eventually went from recreational to club soccer. But we also experienced disappointment and loss. You always kept our heads up, and instilled in us the value of hard work. That every failure was an opportunity to be better. 

My personal relationship with you was a special one. You actively and always encouraged me, both in my game and in my daily life. You always told me that you loved my drive to improve—I was never the strongest player, and was in fact pretty mediocre at best, but you unearthed my strengths and supported them completely. Over the years, we became very close. More than a coach, you became my mentor, my family, and my friend. You always made time for me. You wrote me kind, thought-provoking, and heartfelt letters, which I treasure to this day. You were there for me at times no one else was. I look back and I am stunned by your generosity. You had a thriving practice, a beautiful family, your philanthropic and spiritual devotion. A full and busy life. That you made time for us, and for me, is one of the most important gifts I've ever been given. You made me realize my worth, that I am loved and valued, more than almost anyone or anything has before or since. Having someone in my life like that at such a tender age formed the person I am today. I feel extraordinarily, undeservedly lucky to have known you. Thank you, Doc. I love you.

And I miss you so much it hurts.

Seeing this on Facebook, I felt compelled to share my brief experience  with Dr. Hildebrand.  Sloan and I were classmates at UTDB, and at dental Olympics in San Antonio our senior year, Dr Hildebrand said something to me that profoundly impacted my career.  He simply said "you have a license to never stop learning". I thought of him several times over the next several years as I was taking endless CE courses.  Thank you Dr. H!

I just found out about David's death in November. I will always appreciate his concern for my parents on Chipperton, also his grandfather Paul, who had a habit of climbing up on a ladder to trim the tree in the front yard.
Paul, Jr. was a classmate at HPHS.

Carol and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am sure that none of you remember me, but you all, including your father played a huge part in my life.

 Years ago David helped us get dental work for our daughter whom we had recently adopted. His generosity touched my family and the young girl he and Brody helped all those years ago had a beautiful smile at her wedding this year.  Condolences to Carol and to all of his family.

What an amazing man, and an incredible life. We love you all and are so grateful to God for David and for your precious family. Biggest hugs to you.

It is my great fortune to have known  David through junior high and high school. He was always one of the nicest young men not to mention best looking in our class. David is at peace but he will be missed.

I knew of David through the Pankey institute, but we'd never met.  He was a "famous" dentist to me.  Then, one day refereeing soccer in Dallas, I was doing my pregame and introduced myself to the coach.  "Glen Hall," I said.  "David Hildebrand," he replied.  "THE DAVID HILDEBRAND, of the Pankey institute!?!"  I'd never see a coache's eyes light up so much.  And he was then, as he was always in life, a large-in-character man...my only time to meet him.  We will all miss him.  My prayers for your are for comfort in knowing his value to so many.  Peace be with you...

Dr. Hildebrand represents the very best in dentistry. He was the best of the best as far as clinical skills. Dentistry has lost a giant. Condolences to the family.

David touched my life with his teaching skills for both the profession of dentistry and life.  He will be missed.

What a great man and dentist, he has sure left a legacy!

Dr. Hildebrand was the most excellent, talented dentist that I ever worked for and I worked for some really great dentists. I feel very fortunate to have had the experience of such a dedicated dentist, person, father and friend. Even tho he put so much into his work, his first and foremost important part of his life was his family. I don't know how he did all he did but he had the drive and Grace of God to see him thru. What a wonderful mentor in life and in dentistry Dr. Hildebrand has been for me.  I was one of the many he helped in their search to become better in their profession of dentistry.
