

Demetrio N. Cuartelon, aged 82, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia. He, a resident of Grand Prairie, Texas, was born on April 9, 1943 in Baguio, Philippines to Santiago and Angela Cuartelon.
Demetrio proudly served in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years, attaining the rank of Petty Officer First Class before his retirement. His duties included service ashore in several locations including Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Norfolk, Virginia, and service afloat on several ships that traveled to all corners of the world including the Mediterranean and Antarctica. He earned sever honors during his career, including the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Medal (Third), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (Second Award), Navy Expeditionary Medal (Lebanon), National Defense Service Medal, and Navy Arctic Service Ribbon. His singular operational expertise, diligence, and unrelenting devotion to duty contributed to the safety and combat effectiveness of his final tour of duty aboard the USS Guadalcanal. His many years of devoted service to the United States Navy is a testament to his commitment to the United States in defending our freedoms.
Demetrio is preceded in death by his parents, Santiago and Angela Cuartelon; and his sisters, Nenita Cuartelon and Beatriz Cuartelon Sweatt.
Demetrio is survived by his daughter, Rosie Shanks, and her husband, Ben; his grandson, Noah Chewning; his brothers, Ricardo, Fidel, and Rudolfo Cuartelon; his sister, Luz Cuartelon, and her husband, Constante; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Demetrio will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Dallas, TX. A funeral will occur Friday, August 22, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Dallas, TX. A committal will occur Friday, August 22, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM at Holy Redeemer Cemetery in DeSoto, TX.
