Dora Esther Herrera Reyna born August 20, 1935, peacefully left this earth on August 2, 2024 - 18 days shy of her 89th birthday. She was surrounded by family. She was born in Laredo, Texas and was one of eight children who have all preceded her in death. She married Valeriano Reyna on December 22, 1957. Val preceded her in death on November 18, 2022.
Dora and Val made their home in Dumas, Texas where they raised their 3 children. Dora worked her entire life serving as a nurse’s aide for the Dumas Independent School District. She served on the Safe Place Board for many years and loved working in the Safe Place Thrift Shop.
She and Val traveled to Hawaii and Puerto Rico, as well as Europe, several times with her brother, Chale Herrera, and her sister-in-law, Rosie, and niece, Michelle. They traveled to Spain, France, Italy, Great Britain and Egypt. She loved going to Las Vegas, but most of all to her favorite place on earth, Santa Fe, NM.
Dora loved every dog she met. She insisted on having a dog as a member of the family despite Val’s initial push back on that. Dora won and here came Daisy, a feisty Pomeranian. The Reyna home was never without a 4-legged family member. There was Taffy and Chelsea and lastly, but most importantly, her beloved Bullit.
She and Val were lifelong members of the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where they found a beautiful church family that included Dr. and Lita Miguel, Sharon and Doug Pack, Dr. and Roseanne Langevin, Lisa and Mark Hatley, and others too numerous to mention. They continued to live in Dumas until 2021, when they moved to McKinney to be closer to her son, Vale, and his family. Dora moved to Edmond in February 2024 after suffering a fall and fractured hip. There, she was cared for by the staff at Epworth Villa, and her son, Aaron, and his family.
Dora leaves behind countless beloved friends and family including her daughter Arva Marie (David Chamberlain of Austin, Texas), Aaron (Krista of Edmond, Oklahoma) and Vale (Stephanie of McKinney, Texas). She leaves behind her treasured grandchildren Ariana (Brandon Fanning, Houston, Texas), Ariel (Blake Corgan, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), Matthew Reyna, Josh (Sarah, McKinney, Texas) and Jake (Holly, McKinney, Texas) and the joy in her later years - her great grands: Rori Fanning and Declan Fanning; Adoniram, Roman “RoRo,” Merrick and Sofie Reyna and Joanna “JoJo” Reyna.
