Doris Lindene Benjamin, went to her eternal rest on November 7, 2025, at the age of 92 in the comfort of her home after a brief illness. She was born in Crescent, Oklahoma on December 31,1932 to Roosevelt and Gladys Stephens, and was the fifth child in a family of nine children.
She gave her life to Christ at an early age and spent most of her childhood years growing up in Dover, Oklahoma. In her early adult years, she lived in Rockford, Illinois and Pueblo, Colorado prior to moving to Texas where she met the love of her life, Chalmos Benjamin, while working at the Base Supply at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, TX.
Doris was known for her quick wit, intelligence, and beautiful smile, but she is also remembered for her kind heart, generosity, and willingness to serve. She was never the type to seek recognition but would rather work behind the scenes - ensuring the success of those she loved and giving support to those who needed help. After marrying Chalmos in 1968, they adopted a baby girl while stationed in South Texas, and Doris became a homemaker and began to build a wonderful home for her growing family. When asked why they decided to adopt when both already had children of their own, Doris would reply, “We decided we just wanted to help someone.” As a mother, she made sure each of her children could read and write prior to starting school, helped with homework, and faithfully supported and attended any activity her children were involved in and extended the same type of support to her grandchildren with every opportunity she had.
Doris also supported her husband’s involvement in the Grand Prairie Evening Optimist Club through event planning, membership engagement, and community outreach. She volunteered at the DFW Medical Center of Grand Prairie for approximately 10 years at the information desk and held the office of treasurer for the volunteer auxiliary team. As a woman of God who loved the Lord, she served faithfully and St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Grand Prairie as a deaconess, a member of the choir, and worked with the youth ministry. In her later years, she became a member of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship and served on the usher board for several years alongside with her husband, Chalmos.
Doris loved God, her family, and her friends with her whole heart. Her love for Christ was evident to all who encountered her. Beautiful inside and out, she will be remembered by her family and friends for her strength, kindness, and her gentle reminder to “put all of our hope in Jesus” because without Him - we cannot do anything.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Roosevelt Stephens and Gladys Stephens; siblings, Delois Kern, Darl Stephens, Hobart Glen Stephens, and Theodore Stephens and husband, Chalmos Benjamin.
Her surviving siblings are her brother, Carl Stephens, Sr., and 3 sisters Verna Robinson, Vivian Wilson, and Vinita Dawkins (Jesse).
