Dorothy Maxine Higgins was born on a farm in Kosse, TX, on December 21, 1928, to her parents Maxie and Mattie Higgins. She passed into eternity at MidTowne Assisted Living early December 20, 2018, one day shy of her 90th birthday. She was predeceased by her husband Vernon Potter; her brothers Leland and James Harold Higgins; her sister Opal Wolf; and a great granddaughter Emerson Hill. She is survived by two sisters, Doris Dean and Ruth Triplett; her son Byron Potter and wife Debi; daughter Pam and husband John Badertscher; and her daughter Carla Knott. She had 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Maxine talked often of her life growing up on the farm, picking cotton and tending a garden. Her dad suffered a stroke in the early 40’s and the family moved into Waco to be closer to medical care. After her graduation, she went to work as a typist at Wm. Cameron & Co in Waco. Vernon started a little later at Wm. Cameron and took note of the pretty young typist. They dated several months before Vernon informed her he could not continue because of the difference in their beliefs. A month later they were back together, and Maxine began attending gospel meetings, learning more of Vernon and his family’s highest priority. After several months, Maxine yielded her life to the Lord and entered their fellowship. Soon after, the young couple set a date for their wedding. They married in Waco on June 17, 1949, but moved to Dallas shortly afterwards.
Vernon was offered an opportunity to join a new wholesale building material business in 1955. Maxine supported him in this choice, even though it meant Vernon kept long hours as they built the business. She was a loving mother and “family-maker”, raising the couple’s three children, Byron, Pam and Carla. Maxine enjoyed working in her rose garden, cooking and, in later years, she developed into quite an artist. She and Vernon loved to travel.
Maxine moved to Silverado Memory Care with Vernon in 2012. When MidTowne Assisted Living was built in Midlothian in 2015, she and Vernon moved there. The greatest inheritance Maxine leaves her children are her endearing 67-year marriage to Vernon, her steady profession of faith in God, her wonderful recipes, numerous paintings and her heart full of love for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She leaves us in the sorrow of her passing, but the joy of seeing her go on to receive a new body and eternal life with the Bridegroom of her soul. She will be missed by her friends and family.
A visitation will be held at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home on Friday, December 28th, from 6 – 8 PM. The funeral will also be there at 9 AM, Saturday, December 29th. A private family burial will be held after the funeral.
