Edith was born to Lillian and Frank Melnick on December 23, 1933, in Dallas, Texas, where she grew up and lived a significant part of her adult life, before moving to Miami in 1977. She graduated from Highland Park High School, then studied physical therapy, first at the University of Colorado in Boulder, then graduating from Boston University. In 1953, she met Norman Einspruch through her brother, Harold Melnick, and the couple married in December that year, three days before her 20th birthday.
Edith’s life was filled with cherished passions, including music, reading, Jewish community, lifelong learning, and birding.
She started playing piano as a young girl and kept up the practice throughout her entire life. She and Norman frequented classical music concerts, and they were fortunate to have seen some of the world’s greats, everyone from Rostropovich to Pavarotti to Perlman. Edith was also an avid reader, and was a years-long participant in her local book club.
In Dallas in 1965, she and Norman were two of the original organizers and founding members of Temple Shalom. Edith later served on the temple’s board, and after they moved to Miami in 1977, she eventually served on Temple Beth Am’s board as well.
Edith’s dedication to learning brought her back to university in her 40s, when she got her MBA from the University of Miami in Coral Gables. Later, she and Norman became stalwart members of the Temple Beth Am Saturday Torah class, and her dedication to Jewish study was recognized with the Temple’s prestigious Talmud Torah Award.
She was an avid birdwatcher, something she was able to do both at home in Florida and on travels that took her to locations on four continents. For more than two decades, she volunteered as a guide at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, where she became a beloved fixture.
Edith was a devoted mother and grandmother, cherishing the relationships she had with her adult sons and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Norman, and her three sons, Eric, Andrew (wife Billie Dean), and Franklin (wife Karen Lean), as well as her two grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Edith is predeceased by her brother Harold and his wife aj.
