

He was born to the late Edward E. Smiley and the late Elizabeth Jackson Smiley in Dallas, and predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Smiley Wells, and brother-in-law, Dr. Julian Wells. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 28 years, his nephew, Julian Wells of Bethesda, Maryland, his niece, Elizabeth Verrill, her husband, Ted, and their son, Teddy, of Alexandria, Virginia, and cousins of the Smiley and Jackson families.
Jack grew up in University Park and was a graduate of Highland Park High School and of Southern Methodist University, where he majored in business administration. At SMU he developed lifelong friendships with fraternity brothers of Phi Gamma Delta.
A chartered financial analyst, Jack rose in the ranks of mutual fund managers while at NationsBank in Charlotte and Eaton Vance Management in Boston. He frequently appeared on CNBC and was on a Barron’s list of top mutual fund managers.
Jack and Joyce met on a ski trip in Vail in 1996 and married in 1997. Years later, after living in Charlotte, Boston and West Palm Beach, Jack longed to return home to the Dallas area. In 2018, he and Joyce settled in Frisco. An avid golfer, he was a member of Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco, where he loved his days out on the course with his buddies and with Joyce on Sundays.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 12, at 1:30 p.m., at the Chapel of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, followed by a burial service at Sparkman/Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas.
