Eugenia Maurine Jeffcoat was born at 12:30 p.m. on August 13, 1931, in Farmersville, Texas. Her family moved to Wolfe City in the early 40s, where she faithfully attended the Church of Christ with her mother. At the age of 11, on February 28, 1943, she was baptized and followed Christ for the rest of
her days.
In the late 40s, her family moved to Dallas. She graduated from Crozier Technical High School in 1948 as a member of the Honor Society and the Art and Pottery Club. Several of her classmates described her as a “swell gal.” She and her mother became members of the Peak and East Side Church of Christ, where she met Paul Bartlett. According to her, he was extremely handsome, and all the girls wanted him. She won his heart, and they married on September 16, 1949. They enjoyed traveling all over the United States by car each year and supported each other's creativity through Paul’s photography, her art shows, and his aviation school. They were deeply devoted to one another and had a long, loving marriage of 64 years. Paul and Eugenia became parents in July of 1954 when Gary was born. Bruce came along two years later. In 1961, Valerie was born, and 13 months later, their family was complete with the birth of Joan. Jean was a devoted mother and adored her children.
Paul and Jean were active members of the Garland Rd Church, where Jean often taught ladies' Bible classes. She loved studying scripture. She went deep into the study of angels and soon got a reputation as an expert on the subject, so it became no surprise when she was nicknamed the “Angel Lady.” She never wavered from her love of art. During her years, she painted hundreds of oil paintings and sold them all over Texas. She was extremely talented and perfected the recreation of bluebonnet fields and Texas trees. In fact, she was often compared to the famous Thomas Kinkade. In March of 1987, she added the title of “Mimi.” She and “Papa” loved being grandparents to Daniel, Clayton, Brynn, and Paul, as well as step-grandsons Robert, Quinn, and Zack.
After Paul passed away in 2013, Jean continued to live in Dallas with Valerie. Jean soon developed macular degeneration so in 2018, she and Valerie decided to move in with Joan and her husband, Kent, in Fort Worth before she lost her ability to drive.
At 94 years of age, she was surprisingly still independent, despite some arthritis, her failing vision, and scoliosis. She still attended to Valerie daily, whose special needs grew more and more. Sadly, Jean suffered a mini-stroke on August 15th. After spending several days in the hospital, her body began to fail. She came home to spend her last five days with Kent and Joan and passed away peacefully around 10:00 p.m. on September 13th. She was a tremendous example of a wife, mother, and friend. She will be greatly missed, but we know we will see her again because of her unwavering faith and devotion to God. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Paul Ray Bartlett, and son, Gary Paul Bartlett. Her surviving family members are Patricia Bartlett of Rowlett, Bruce & Kathy Bartlett of Emory, Valerie Bartlett of Fort Worth, and Kent & Joan Smith of Fort Worth. Her surviving grandchildren are Daniel Bartlett and Nicole Ernst of The Colony, Clayton Smith of Fort Worth, Kurt and Brynn Jenkins of Birmingham, Alabama, and Paul and Amanda Smith of Fort Worth. Her great-grandchildren are Hallie, Harper, and Hudson Smith of Fort Worth and Cayden and Carter Bartlett of The Colony.
