Frances Elizabeth Cain was born in Stamford, Texas on April 11,1924 to Edgar Kellogg and Annie Jewel Hall. She grew up in Dallas as an only child and graduated from Highland Park High School. Frances attended North Texas Agricultural College in Arlington, Texas, (now University of Texas at Arlington) where she studied and obtained a certificate concentrating on secretarial, bookkeeping and office management skills. She met James Avery Cain on a blind date in college. They married on April 27, 1946 following James’s return from World War II. Frances worked in a life insurance office and later from home as a bookkeeper for a manufacturer’s sales rep and a landscaping company. Frances and James raised 3 daughters...Frances Ann, Susan and Julie. Frances was a kind and sweet person who was a good mother who taught her girls manners, helped with homework and took them to after school activities. Education was a priority in their home and were proud that all 3 of their daughters graduated from college. Frances and James lived primarily in Dallas; however, they spent 4 years in Anchorage, Alaska in the late 1970s and several years in East Texas upon retirement.
Frances and James enjoyed traveling and playing duplicate bridge. They became involved in duplicate bridge tournaments while living in Anchorage. Some trips during retirement were planned in order to attend duplicate bridge tournaments with their friends Clara and Eldon Chappell. Frances achieved the rank of Life Master. Some other travel destinations included Mexico, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Thailand. Her last trip was 2 years ago to Houston for Brittany and Yale’s wedding. She was looking forward to going to Kansas City next year for Trenton and Denise’s wedding.
Frances and James, also known to their 5 grandchildren as Mommo and Poppo, always made themselves available to help with their grandchildren. They lived close to Tommy and Fran and watched Kelly when Fran went back to school to become an attorney. They took Kelly to Alaska when they lived there as well as on a trip to Hawaii to visit Julie. Kelly also lived with Mommo and Poppo while working at a Plano jewelry store.
Trenton and Yale spent many weekends in East Texas fishing and golfing. When Frances and James moved down the alley from Kenneth and Susan in Plano, Trenton and Yale spent many hours playing games and swimming in their pool.
They also made trips across the continental United States and Hawaii visiting Julie, Mike, Kyle and Leslie while Mike served in the United States Marine Corps. Kyle spent a semester living with them while he attended Fairhill School.
Frances also has 2 great-granddaughters, Brooklynn and Adeline. She and James were in Nacogdoches for the birth of Brooklynn. She enjoyed telling her friends about all of her grandchildren.
As Frances aged, she made the decision herself to give up driving as well as to move to an independent living apartment. She studied the stock market and handled her finances until the last 3 years. Frances loved to read mysteries, especially Mary Higgins Clark.
Frances survived breast cancer and lived over 30 years with diabetes. She never complained about her health issues. Our deepest gratitude goes to Appletree Court Assisted Living and her long time home health nurse Brian. Their support the past several years kept her as independent as possible. She was a long time member of Custer Road Methodist Church and appreciated the calls from Rev. Jack Gibson, her former Sunday School teacher. She will be missed for her kindness, generosity and love for family.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, James Cain. She is survived by her daughters Frances Ann Lout (Tommy) of Dallas, Susan Woodard (Kenneth) of Plano and Julie Masterpool (Mike) of Sparks, Nevada. She is also survived by grandchildren Kelly Lout of Austin, Trenton Woodard of College Station, Yale (Brittany) Woodard of Pearland, Kyle and Leslie Masterpool of Sparks, Nevada and great grandchildren Brooklynn Woodard and Adeline Woodard.
A private family service was held at Sparkman Hillcrest in Dallas on Friday, November 24, 2017. Memorials may be made to the Appletree Court Employee Christmas Fund 870 W. Arapaho Road, Richardson, TX 75080 or the charity of your choice.
