G.L. Wood found the peace he had yearned for so long, passing away the night of Aug. 16 at the age of 98. A continual stream of his children tended him through his final days. He joins his late wife of 70 years, Alice, whom he has missed tremendously since her passing more than five years ago.
G.L. was a hard-working hero to his six children and a devoted husband. He was the sixth of eight children who grew up in a sharecropper’s family, picking cotton through the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.
G.L. enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during the last two years of World War II. He saw action at the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He returned to Texas, arriving in Dallas, where he met Alice Mendoza on a blind date. They married in San Antonio in 1949 and returned to Dallas, where he worked as a brick mason for over 40 years. They retired to Quitman, Texas, and eventually moved back to the Metroplex following an accident that left G.L. with third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body.
G.L. is survived by his daughters, Sandra Jones, Diana Aldridge and Donna Wood; his sons, Richard, Paul and Sean Wood; his sister, Peggy Jean Livesay; sons-in-law, John Jones and Frank Aldridge; his daughters-in-law, Diane Wood and Isabel Comas Wood; his grandchildren, Valerie Jones, Olivia Comas Wood and Elena Comas Wood; his grandson, Adam, wife Merrill, and great-grandsons Penn and Adler; his grandson, Nathan; grandson Colin, wife Kristin, and great-grandsons Caleb, Luca and Owen; grandsons, Daniel and Andrés-Román Comas Wood.
